Chapter 9: The Stranger Who Knew My Mother

I didn't sleep.

Not because I was afraid.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.

My mother.

A woman I remembered only through fragments.

Her smile.

Her voice.

Her perfume.

The way she used to sing while cooking dinner.

I spent years believing I knew her story.

Now I realized I only knew the version I was allowed to know.

The next morning, I drove to the location from the message.

A small coffee shop on the edge of town.

Nothing special.

No dramatic setting.

No obvious danger.

Which somehow made it worse.

People who wanted to hurt you didn't always look dangerous.

Sometimes they looked normal.

I sat near the window.

Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty.

I started thinking nobody was coming.

Until an older woman walked in.

She looked around.

Then her eyes stopped on me.

My heart jumped.

Because I recognized her.

Not from meeting her.

From a photograph.

A photograph from my mother's old belongings.

She walked toward my table.

"Michael Bennett?""

I stood.

"Yes.""

She sat down.

"My name is Evelyn Carter.""

I waited.

"I knew your mother.""

The words alone were enough to get my attention.

"How?""

She looked at me carefully.

"Because I was there.""

"Where?""

"The night she died.""

My entire body froze.

"What?""

Evelyn took a deep breath.

"Your mother called me before she left.""

"Why?""

"Because she was scared.""

I stared at her.

"Scared of Richard?""

She looked down.

"No.""

That surprised me.

"Then who?""

Her eyes met mine.

"Arthur.""

The world stopped.

I couldn't move.

"You're lying.""

"I wish I was.""

My anger exploded.

"You don't know my father.""

"I knew him.""

"No.""

I stood.

"My father raised me.""

Evelyn didn't flinch.

"I know.""

"Then don't accuse him.""

She looked at me sadly.

"I'm not accusing him.""

"Then what are you saying?""

She reached into her bag.

And placed something on the table.

A photograph.

My mother.

Arthur.

Richard.

And another person.

A man I didn't recognize.

"Your father wasn't the only person your mother was afraid of.""

I looked at the picture.

"Who is that?""

Evelyn whispered:

"Your mother's brother.""

I frowned.

"My mother didn't have a brother.""

Evelyn's expression became serious.

"That's what everyone wanted you to believe.""

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

I looked at the photograph again.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because your wedding changed everything.""

"What does that mean?""

"Because Diane Whitmore saw your father.""

"And?""

Evelyn leaned closer.

"She realized the past was coming back.""

I felt a chill.

"What past?""

She looked directly into my eyes.

"The past that got your mother killed.""

I swallowed.

"Tell me the truth.""

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Then said the words that changed everything.

"Michael, your father didn't hide Richard from you because he hated him.""

A pause.

"He hid Richard because he was afraid of what would happen if you found him.""

I waited.

"Because Richard wasn't the only person who wanted your mother silent.""

My heart pounded.

"Who else?""

Evelyn looked at me.

"Someone much closer to you than you think.""

Before I could ask another question, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

Fear.

She stood quickly.

"We need to leave.""

I grabbed her arm.

"Why?""

She looked toward the entrance.

A black SUV had stopped outside.

And through the coffee shop window...

I saw someone stepping out.

Someone I knew.

Someone who should not have been there.

Diane Whitmore.

May you like

Evelyn whispered:

"She found us.""
