Chapter 27: The Woman Who Knew My Father’s Weakness
Sarah chose the location carefully.
An abandoned church outside the city.
Of course.
Everyone in my life had a place filled with memories and ghosts.
I arrived alone.
At least, that was what Sarah believed.
Arthur stayed nearby.
Not because I asked him to.
Because he was my father.
Some things never changed.
The church doors opened before I touched them.
Sarah was inside.
Older than the photograph.
But the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
My father's eyes.
My mother's seriousness.
A face built from two families that had destroyed each other.
"Michael.""
Her voice was calm.
"You came.""
I looked at her.
"You wanted me here.""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because you deserve the truth.""
I almost smiled.
"Everyone says that.""
She looked down.
"Everyone lies.""
The answer surprised me.
"Are you saying you don't?""
She looked at me.
"I have lied more than anyone.""
Silence.
"Why?""
"Because I was protecting something.""
"What?""
She looked toward the window.
"Your mother.""
I froze.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"No.""
She walked closer.
"I expect you to listen.""
I stayed silent.
"Your mother discovered something.""
"The truth about Richard?""
"No.""
"What then?""
Sarah looked at me.
"The truth about Arthur.""
My jaw tightened.
"Not again.""
She shook her head.
"You think I hate him.""
"Don't you?""
She looked away.
"I loved him.""
That shocked me.
"What?""
"Arthur was my little brother.""
"I mean...""
I stopped.
She smiled sadly.
"Yes.""
A pause.
"But I also loved him like family.""
I didn't understand.
"Then why blame him?""
"Because I watched him make the same mistake twice.""
"What mistake?""
"Choosing sacrifice over honesty.""
The words sounded familiar.
"What does that mean?""
Sarah reached into her bag.
She removed a document.
"I found this after your mother died.""
I took it.
It was a letter.
From my mother.
To Sarah.
My hands shook.
Sarah,
If you are reading this, then Arthur has made the choice I knew he would make.
He will protect Michael.
Even if it destroys him.
I stopped.
Sarah watched me.
The letter continued.
But Sarah, you need to understand something.
Arthur did not fail me.
He saved the person I loved most.
My son.
I looked up.
Sarah's eyes were wet.
"She wrote that?""
"Yes.""
"Then why blame him?""
Sarah took a deep breath.
"Because I didn't know.""
"What?""
"I only found out years later.""
She looked away.
"I spent decades hating him for something he never did.""
I felt confused.
"Then why are we here?""
"Because there is one thing your mother never knew.""
"What?""
Sarah looked directly at me.
"Someone caused that accident.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
She handed me another photograph.
This one was recent.
A person standing outside my house.
Watching.
I recognized him.
My blood ran cold.
Because it was someone I trusted.
Someone who had been beside me.
Someone who attended my wedding.
"Who is that?""
Sarah whispered:
"The person who has been protecting the truth.""
I stared.
"No.""
Sarah nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph again.
And the name escaped my mouth.
"Diane.""
Sarah's expression changed.
"No.""
I looked up.
"Then who?""
She answered quietly.
"The person you never suspected.""
A pause.
"The person who raised you.""
My heart stopped.
"Arthur?""
Sarah shook her head.
"No.""
She looked at me.
"The person who raised you isn't the person you think.""
I couldn't breathe.
Then Sarah said the words that shattered everything.
"Michael...""
"Arthur Bennett is not your father.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She stepped closer.
"Your mother asked him to raise you.""
The world went silent.
"Because your real father...""
She paused.
"...is still alive.""
May you like
