Chapter 11: The Last Promise

I drove home faster than I should have.

My hands gripped the steering wheel.

My mind replayed every conversation.

Every secret.

Every lie.

My father knew.

That was the only thought I could focus on.

He knew something.

Something about my mother's death.

Something about Richard.

Something about the Whitmores.

And even though I understood why he hid things...

Understanding didn't erase the pain.

When I arrived, the garage door was open.

My father was inside.

Working.

Like always.

Like the world hadn't changed.

I walked in.

He looked up.

One glance at my face told him everything.

"You met Evelyn.""

Not a question.

A statement.

I stopped.

"How did you know?""

He put down his tools.

"Because I knew she would eventually find you.""

My heart sank.

"You knew where she was?""

He looked away.

"Yes.""

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"Of course you did.""

"Michael.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Don't.""

He became quiet.

"How many people knew?""

He didn't answer.

"How many people knew my mother's story except me?""

My father closed his eyes.

"I was trying to protect you.""

I looked at him.

"Stop saying that.""

The words came out harder than I intended.

"Because maybe you were.""

His expression hurt.

"But you were also protecting yourself.""

Silence.

Because he knew.

"You were afraid.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised me.

"Afraid of what?""

He sat down.

"Losing the only family I had left.""

I looked at him.

"You thought I would leave?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"I thought you would look for answers.""

"And?""

"And I thought the answers would destroy everything.""

I walked closer.

"Maybe they were supposed to.""

He looked at me.

"What?""

"Maybe I was supposed to know.""

My father's eyes filled.

"You sound like your mother.""

I froze.

"What?""

He smiled sadly.

"She said the same thing.""

"When?""

"The last night I saw her.""

My heart stopped.

"You saw her the night she died?""

He nodded.

"She came to my house.""

"Why?""

"To give me something.""

"What?""

He walked toward a locked drawer.

From inside, he removed a small box.

My breathing slowed.

"What is that?""

"The thing I promised her I would protect.""

He placed it on the table.

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

Old.

Simple.

But somehow, it felt more important than anything I had ever held.

"What is this?""

"Your mother's evidence.""

My heart raced.

"The evidence she collected?""

He nodded.

"Why didn't you give this to the police?""

His face changed.

"Because she told me not to.""

"Why?""

"Because she didn't trust them.""

I stared.

"She thought they were involved?""

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

I picked up the flash drive.

"What's on it?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at him.

"You never checked?""

He shook his head.

"She made me promise.""

"Why would you keep a promise like that?""

He looked at me.

"Because she was dying.""

That answer silenced me.

My father continued.

"She knew she might not make it home.""

My throat tightened.

"She knew?""

"Yes.""

He looked at the floor.

"She hugged you before she left.""

I closed my eyes.

I remembered.

A blurry memory.

My mother holding me.

Kissing my forehead.

Telling me she loved me.

I had forgotten.

Or maybe I had buried it because it hurt too much.

"She told me something.""

"What?""

Arthur looked at me.

"She said, 'If Michael ever finds out the truth, tell him one thing.''"

I waited.

"What?""

My father's voice cracked.

"Tell him I never left him.""

Tears filled my eyes.

Because suddenly, I wasn't searching for a dead mother.

I was searching for the last pieces of her love.

My father pushed the flash drive toward me.

"You're ready now.""

I looked at him.

"Are you?""

He smiled sadly.

"No.""

The answer was honest.

"But you are.""

That night, I connected the flash drive to my laptop.

A single folder appeared.

One file.

A video.

Created twenty-seven years earlier.

The title was simple.

For Michael.

I clicked play.

The screen went black.

Then my mother's face appeared.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Scared.

But smiling.

My heart broke instantly.

"Michael...""

Her voice filled the room.

"If you are watching this, then something happened.""

She paused.

"I hoped you would never need to see this.""

A tear moved down my face.

Then she said:

"But if you are seeing this, it means Arthur kept his promise.""

The video continued.

And then my mother revealed the secret that changed everything.

"Your father is innocent.""

I froze.

She wasn't talking about Richard.

She was talking about Arthur.

"The night I died was not an accident.""

My breathing stopped.

"Someone tried to kill me.""

A pause.

"And the person who ordered it...""

The screen flickered.

May you like

My mother's eyes filled with fear.

"...is someone you have known your entire life.""
