Chapter 6: The Truth Arthur Buried

I didn't drive home immediately.

I drove for almost two hours.

No destination.

No plan.

Just driving.

Because my entire life felt like it had shifted overnight.

First, I discovered my biological father was alive.

Then I discovered he was connected to the woman whose family had destroyed my wedding.

And now, Diane had planted a question in my mind.

Did Arthur know more than he admitted?

I hated that question.

Because it felt like betrayal.

Not from my father.

From the situation.

But once a question enters your mind, you can't always force it out.

That night, I returned to my father's house.

The garage light was still on.

Of course it was.

My father always stayed up late.

Always working.

Always fixing something.

I walked inside.

He looked up.

The second he saw my face, he knew.

"You found out more.""

I stopped.

"You knew I would find out?""

He put down his tools.

"Michael.""

"Did you know Richard disappeared?""

Silence.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

"You did.""

He closed his eyes.

"I was hoping you wouldn't have to learn this way.""

I stepped back.

"Learn what?""

He sat down.

"I found Richard.""

The words hit me.

"When?""

"Years ago.""

I stared at him.

"You found him?""

He nodded.

"After your mother died.""

My voice became cold.

"Where?""

My father looked at his hands.

"In a hospital.""

I waited.

"He was dying.""

The anger inside me froze.

"What?""

"Richard had cancer.""

I didn't know what to say.

"He was alone.""

My father swallowed.

"And he asked about you.""

The room went silent.

"He knew about me?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't he come?""

My father looked away.

"Because he was ashamed.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Convenient.""

"Michael...""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"He abandoned me.""

"I know.""

"He abandoned Mom.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you protecting him?""

My father looked at me.

"I'm not.""

His voice was firm.

"I'm protecting you from carrying someone else's hatred.""

That stopped me.

"What do you mean?""

He stood.

"Your mother spent her final years trying to make sure you didn't grow up angry.""

I looked down.

"She forgave him?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"But she didn't want you to become like him.""

I sat quietly.

My father walked to the old cabinet again.

This time, he pulled out another box.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

"What's this?""

"Richard wrote them.""

My eyes widened.

"To me?""

He nodded.

"He wanted to contact you.""

"Why didn't you give them to me?""

My father looked broken.

"Because every letter came with the same thing.""

"What?""

"A warning.""

I opened the first envelope.

Inside was a letter dated fifteen years earlier.

The handwriting was different.

A man's handwriting.

Michael,

I don't expect forgiveness.

I don't deserve it.

But there is something you need to know.

The Whitmore family isn't what you think.

I stopped reading.

My father watched me.

"What does he mean?""

"I don't know.""

I looked up.

"You don't know?""

He shook his head.

"Because I never opened the rest.""

"Why?""

His answer was quiet.

"Because your mother told me not to.""

I stared at him.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

"She knew Richard would try to come back someday.""

I looked at the pile of letters.

Twenty-seven years of secrets.

Twenty-seven years of unanswered questions.

And suddenly, I realized something.

My wedding didn't destroy my life.

It uncovered it.

The woman I almost married had connected me to the family I never knew.

The father who raised me had hidden the truth to protect me.

And the father who abandoned me...

Had been trying to warn me.

I picked up the letters.

"Why now?""

My father looked confused.

"What?""

"Why did everything happen now?""

He didn't answer.

Because neither of us knew.

But I did.

Something had brought all these secrets back to the surface.

The wedding.

The jacket.

The letter.

The Whitmore family.

All of it was connected.

And somewhere out there...

Richard Whitmore had left me one final message.

A message that could destroy everything I believed about my family.

I opened the next letter.

And the first line made my blood run cold.

Michael,

If you are reading this, it means Arthur finally decided you were ready.

May you like

But before you judge him...

You need to know what really happened the night your mother died.
