Chapter 23: The Person Nobody Suspected
We stayed in the garage for nearly an hour without speaking.
The letter sat between us.
A small piece of paper carrying the weight of twenty-seven years.
My father's expression had changed.
Not because he was afraid for himself.
Because he was afraid for me.
"Who?""
I finally asked.
He didn't answer.
"Dad.""
He looked at me.
"I don't know.""
The answer should have frustrated me.
But this time, I saw something different.
Fear.
Not the fear of someone being exposed.
The fear of someone realizing the truth too late.
"I need to know who she meant.""
My father nodded.
"We find out.""
Vanessa had been quiet the entire time.
She picked up one of the photographs from the box.
"Michael.""
I turned.
She was staring at an old picture.
"What?""
She handed it to me.
It showed my mother.
Arthur.
Diane.
Evelyn.
And someone else.
A person standing slightly behind them.
Someone whose face had been cut out.
But the clothes were visible.
A black suit.
A silver watch.
A ring.
Vanessa's face changed.
"I know that watch.""
My heart started beating faster.
"Who?""
She looked at me.
"My grandfather.""
Richard's father.
The man who built the Whitmore empire.
The man everyone had described as the beginning of the corruption.
"But he's dead.""
My father nodded.
"He died fifteen years ago.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
She looked closer.
"My grandfather wore that watch every day.""
I stared at the photograph.
The person in the picture was standing beside my mother.
Not against her.
Beside her.
"What does this mean?""
My father looked at the photo.
"It means we misunderstood the enemy.""
I thought about everything.
Richard.
Daniel.
Diane.
Everyone had been looking at Richard.
But what if Richard wasn't the beginning?
What if he was just another person controlled by someone else?
"Who was your grandfather?""
I asked Vanessa.
Her expression became uncomfortable.
"The kind of man people respected publicly and feared privately.""
"Meaning?""
"Meaning people didn't say no to him.""
I looked at the photo.
"Your family built everything because of him.""
"Yes.""
"And Richard continued it.""
"Yes.""
"But someone continued controlling it after he died.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Maybe.""
The word bothered me.
Maybe.
I needed certainty.
I needed something solid.
Then my phone rang.
Evelyn.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
Her voice was weak.
"Michael.""
I froze.
"Evelyn?""
"I don't have much time.""
"Where are you?""
"Don't ask.""
"Are you safe?""
A pause.
"No.""
My heart tightened.
"Who has you?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
"You found the box.""
I looked at my father.
"Yes.""
"Then you know.""
"Know what?""
"The person who destroyed your family.""
I grabbed the phone tighter.
"Tell me.""
Silence.
Then:
"I was there the night your mother died.""
"I know.""
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"You don't know everything.""
I waited.
"I saw who caused the accident.""
My entire body froze.
"Who?""
She whispered:
"It wasn't Richard.""
I felt cold.
"Then who?""
The line became quiet.
Too quiet.
Then she said:
"It was someone Arthur loved.""
The call ended.
I looked at my father.
He looked terrified.
Because he knew exactly what that meant.
Someone Arthur loved.
Someone close.
Someone who had been part of his life.
My mind raced through names.
Diane.
Vanessa.
Evelyn.
No.
Then one possibility appeared.
The one I refused to consider.
"Who did you love?""
I asked my father.
He looked confused.
"What?""
"Who did you love besides my mother?""
His face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
I knew immediately.
There was someone.
"Dad.""
He sat down.
"There was someone.""
The room went silent.
"Who?""
He looked at me.
"Your mother knew about her.""
My heart sank.
"Who was she?""
My father whispered:
"Her name was Sarah.""
I stared.
"Sarah?""
He nodded.
"She was my sister.""
I froze.
I had never heard of a sister.
"My aunt?""
He nodded.
"Why don't I know about her?""
My father's eyes filled with sadness.
"Because she was the person your mother warned me about.""
The world stopped.
"What?""
He looked at the photograph again.
"Sarah was the person who betrayed us.""
I couldn't move.
My entire life had been built around a woman I never knew existed.
A woman connected to my father.
A woman my mother feared.
And a woman who had disappeared before I was old enough to remember.
"Where is she now?""
My father looked at me.
"That's the problem.""
"What?""
"She never disappeared.""
A chill moved through me.
"Then where is she?""
May you like
My father said the words slowly.
"She's been watching you your entire life.""
