Chapter 5: The Man Who Disappeared
The next morning, I drove to the Whitmore estate.
I didn't tell my father.
Not because I wanted to hide things from him.
Because I knew what he would say.
He would tell me to be careful.
He would tell me not to act out of anger.
He would tell me to think.
And he would be right.
But I needed answers.
For twenty-seven years, someone had decided what I was allowed to know about my own life.
I was done being kept in the dark.
The Whitmore mansion looked exactly like I expected.
Huge.
Perfect.
Cold.
The kind of place where every flower was arranged perfectly and every smile was carefully practiced.
I rang the doorbell.
A few seconds later, Diane opened the door.
The moment she saw me, her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Almost like she had been expecting me.
"Michael.""
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Can we talk?""
She looked behind me.
"Where's Arthur?""
My jaw tightened.
"You don't get to say his name like you care.""
Her face hardened.
"I see.""
I stepped inside.
"Who is Richard Whitmore?""
The color disappeared from her face.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
And that was enough.
"You should leave.""
I stared at her.
"You know who he is.""
She looked away.
"Michael, this is complicated.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"It's simple.""
My voice lowered.
"You knew.""
Diane stayed silent.
"You knew my father wasn't my biological father.""
Still nothing.
"And you knew Richard was.""
She finally looked at me.
"How much do you know?""
The question confirmed everything.
My heart sank.
"Enough.""
She walked toward the living room.
"Sit down.""
I didn't.
"I don't want coffee. I don't want polite conversation. I want the truth.""
Diane sighed.
"You have your mother's stubbornness.""
The comment angered me.
"Don't talk about my mother.""
Her expression changed.
Almost regret.
"She was a good woman.""
"Then why did everyone lie to me?""
She looked at the floor.
"Because Richard was dangerous.""
I froze.
"Dangerous?""
She nodded.
"Your biological father was not the man people thought he was.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Interesting. Because everyone says he was powerful.""
"He was.""
She looked at me.
"And that's exactly why he was dangerous.""
I crossed my arms.
"Tell me.""
Diane hesitated.
Then she said something I never expected.
"Richard Whitmore was my brother.""
The room felt silent.
My biological father was Diane's brother.
Vanessa's uncle.
The man whose family had just humiliated my father.
I felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know where you were.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"After your mother died, Arthur disappeared with you.""
My anger rose.
"He protected me.""
Diane didn't argue.
Instead, she looked ashamed.
"I know.""
That surprised me.
"You know?""
She nodded.
"My brother destroyed a lot of lives.""
I waited.
"Your mother wasn't the only person he hurt.""
"Then why did you let me marry Vanessa?""
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Diane went silent.
And that silence told me everything.
"You knew who I was.""
She didn't deny it.
"You knew I was Arthur Bennett's son.""
Her eyes lowered.
"Yes.""
My stomach turned.
"And you still let your daughter marry me?""
"Michael...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Answer me.""
Diane looked exhausted.
"Vanessa didn't know.""
I stared.
"Are you saying she had no idea?""
"No.""
"Do you expect me to believe that?""
Diane looked directly at me.
"For once, yes.""
I wanted to hate her.
I wanted to believe every person in that family was exactly the same.
But something in her voice stopped me.
She wasn't defending herself.
She was afraid.
"Where is Richard?""
She hesitated.
"I don't know.""
"You expect me to believe that?""
"I haven't seen him in years.""
"Why?""
Her face became pale.
"Because he disappeared.""
"When?""
"Shortly after your mother died.""
I froze.
The timing was too perfect.
"What are you saying?""
Diane whispered:
"I think your father knows more than he told you.""
My heart dropped.
"My father?""
"Arthur.""
I stepped back.
"No.""
"Michael...""
"No.""
Because I knew my father.
I knew the man who raised me.
But then I remembered something.
The fear on his face.
The way he said there were things he never told me.
May you like
And suddenly, a terrible question appeared.
What else was hidden?
