Chapter 17: The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight

I returned to the hospital before sunrise.

The necklace was in my pocket.

The questions were in my head.

And every answer created ten more questions.

My father was awake when I entered his room.

He looked exhausted.

But alive.

That was the only thing that mattered.

For a moment, I didn't say anything.

I just stood there.

Because despite everything...

Despite the secrets...

Despite the confusion...

He was still my father.

"You're angry.""

His voice was weak.

I sat down.

"Yes.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

"But I'm not angry because you lied.""

He looked surprised.

"I'm angry because you carried everything alone.""

His eyes softened.

I pulled out the necklace.

The moment he saw it...

He stopped breathing.

"Where did you get that?""

"Vanessa.""

His expression changed.

"She had it.""

I nodded.

"She knew.""

My father looked away.

"Your mother trusted her family.""

"Why?""

"Because not everyone in that family was evil.""

I studied him.

"You mean Richard.""

"Richard was different.""

"And Diane?""

He hesitated.

"Diane made choices.""

"What choices?""

He looked at the necklace.

"Choices she regrets.""

I placed it on the table.

"Tell me about the initials.""

His face became serious.

"She gave it to me.""

My heart stopped.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

"The night she died.""

"Why?""

"Because she wanted me to know something.""

"What?""

"That if anything happened to her, I had to protect you.""

I looked at the necklace.

"Why put your initials on it?""

He was quiet.

Then:

"Because it wasn't meant to prove who your father was.""

I looked at him.

"It was meant to remind you who stayed.""

That sentence hit me.

Again.

Because everyone kept trying to explain blood.

DNA.

Family names.

But my entire life had been about something else.

Love.

Sacrifice.

Choice.

I picked up the necklace.

"There's something inside.""

My father looked at me.

"What?""

I examined the pendant.

There was a small opening.

A hidden compartment.

My hands shook.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

Folded carefully.

I opened it.

Three words.

The name of a person.

My blood froze.

Because it wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Diane.

It was someone else.

Someone impossible.

Evelyn Carter.

I looked at my father.

"Evelyn.""

His expression changed.

"You know her?""

"Yes.""

He closed his eyes.

"Of course.""

"What does that mean?""

He looked at me.

"Your mother trusted her.""

I stared.

"But she said you were hiding things.""

"She was.""

"Why?""

"Because she knew the truth.""

"What truth?""

My father looked toward the window.

"The truth about your mother's death.""

I stood.

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

"Because she was waiting.""

"For what?""

"For the right person to bring you the truth.""

I thought about the coffee shop.

The photograph.

The warnings.

Evelyn wasn't trying to hurt me.

She was trying to guide me.

But why?

I left the hospital and went straight to Evelyn's house.

Nobody answered.

I knocked again.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the door was slightly open.

My heart started racing.

"Evelyn?""

No response.

I entered carefully.

The house was destroyed.

Drawers opened.

Papers everywhere.

Someone had searched the place.

I walked deeper inside.

Then I saw something on the floor.

A photograph.

My mother.

Evelyn.

And Arthur.

Together.

But that wasn't what shocked me.

Behind them stood another person.

A young man.

Someone I recognized.

Someone from my wedding.

Someone who had hugged me.

Someone who had smiled while wishing me happiness.

My uncle.

Daniel Carter.

But the photograph was dated twenty-eight years ago.

Before he disappeared.

Before everyone pretended he didn't exist.

I picked up the photo.

And turned it over.

There was a message written on the back.

Michael,

If you found this, then Daniel has returned.

Do not trust him.

Not even if he says he wants to help.

I stared at the words.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Daniel wasn't a forgotten relative.

He wasn't just part of the past.

He was still here.

And he had been closer to me than I ever realized.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Michael.""

The voice was familiar.

My body went cold.

"Daniel.""

A pause.

Then a calm laugh.

"Good.""

"What do you want?""

"The same thing your mother wanted.""

"What's that?""

"To stop the truth from destroying everyone.""

I looked around Evelyn's destroyed house.

"You hurt Evelyn.""

"No.""

His voice became colder.

"Someone else did.""

"Who?""

Silence.

Then:

"The person your father has been protecting.""

The call ended.

And for the first time...

May you like

I wondered if my father wasn't protecting me from the truth.

Maybe he was protecting someone else.
