Chapter 14: The Lie That Saved My Life
I couldn't speak.
The words were sitting between us.
The person who stayed.
The phrase repeated inside my head.
Over and over.
Because there was only one person who stayed.
Arthur.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who was there after my mother died.
The man who never left.
And now I was staring at a letter from my mother suggesting that the person closest to me was the one who destroyed everything.
My mind rejected it immediately.
No.
It couldn't be.
It wasn't possible.
But then I remembered something.
My father knew too much.
He always had.
He knew about Richard.
He knew about the evidence.
He knew about the investigation.
He knew about the night my mother died.
And he had hidden everything.
I looked at him.
"Is this about you?""
His face collapsed.
"Michael.""
"Answer me.""
He didn't.
That was the worst answer.
I stepped back.
"All these years...""
My voice broke.
"All these years, I thought you were protecting me.""
"I was.""
"Then why does this letter say someone close to me betrayed her?""
He closed his eyes.
"Because your mother didn't know everything.""
The sentence shocked me.
"What?""
"She suspected.""
"Suspected you?""
He nodded slowly.
"But she was wrong.""
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
But my entire world had become built on impossible things.
"Then prove it.""
He looked at me.
"How?""
"Tell me everything.""
He was silent.
"No more protecting me.""
A tear moved down his face.
"You don't understand what you're asking.""
"Yes, I do.""
I stepped closer.
"I am asking for the truth.""
My father sat down.
And for the first time in my life...
Arthur Bennett looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like carrying twenty-seven years of secrets had finally become too heavy.
"Your mother didn't trust anyone after she found out about Richard.""
He began.
"Not even me.""
"Why?""
"Because she was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of being wrong.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
He looked at the letter.
"Your mother loved people deeply.""
He smiled sadly.
"That was both her greatest strength and her weakness.""
I waited.
"She believed everyone had good inside them.""
"And?""
"Richard proved her wrong.""
Silence.
"But she couldn't accept that someone she loved could hurt her.""
I understood.
My mother didn't want to believe Richard was dangerous.
"And what about you?""
His eyes met mine.
"I loved her.""
The answer was simple.
Painfully simple.
"I would have died for her.""
"Then why did she suspect you?""
He looked down.
"Because I lied.""
The words hit me.
"About what?""
He took a deep breath.
"The night she died.""
My heart stopped.
"What lie?""
"I told her I was going home.""
I frowned.
"And?""
"I didn't.""
The room became cold.
"Where were you?""
He looked at me.
"I followed Richard.""
I stared.
"You followed him?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I knew he was dangerous.""
"Then what happened?""
My father looked away.
"I saw the accident.""
I froze.
"You were there?""
He nodded.
"I saw the car.""
"My mother's car?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
His eyes filled.
"Because when I arrived...""
A pause.
"Your mother was already gone.""
I couldn't breathe.
"And Richard?""
"He wasn't there.""
I looked at him.
"So you knew.""
"I knew he was involved.""
"Then why protect him?""
"I wasn't protecting him.""
His voice broke.
"I was protecting you.""
I shook my head.
"I don't understand.""
My father stood.
"Because someone saw me.""
"Who?""
"Diane.""
I froze.
"Diane saw you?""
He nodded.
"She saw me at the scene.""
My mind raced.
"Then why didn't she tell anyone?""
"Because she was protecting her family.""
"So she knew.""
"Yes.""
Everything connected.
Diane knew.
Arthur knew.
My mother knew.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
"But there's more.""
My father walked back to the box.
He removed another photograph.
"This is why I never told you.""
I took it.
The picture showed the accident scene.
My mother's car.
Police.
Crowds.
And in the corner...
A man.
Watching.
My blood went cold.
Because I recognized him.
Not from the past.
From now.
From my life.
The man standing beside the Whitmore family in countless photographs.
The man who attended my wedding.
The man who shook my hand.
The man who congratulated me.
"Who is he?""
My father looked at me.
"Your uncle.""
I froze.
"My mother's brother?""
May you like
He nodded.
"The man everyone told you never existed.""
