Chapter 8: The Family That Built Its Empire on Lies

I spent the next morning doing something I hadn't done in years.

I searched.

Not casually.

Not out of curiosity.

I searched like my life depended on it.

Because maybe it did.

I sat in my apartment surrounded by documents, old photographs, and every piece of information I could find about the Whitmore family.

The name appeared everywhere.

Real estate.

Investments.

Charity foundations.

Political donations.

The Whitmores weren't just wealthy.

They were connected.

Powerful.

Protected.

Exactly like my father had described.

I stared at Richard Whitmore's photograph.

The man I had never met.

The man whose blood ran through my veins.

The man who had somehow shaped my entire life without being part of it.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But after everything I discovered, I needed answers.

I answered.

"Hello.""

There was silence.

Then her voice.

"Michael.""

She sounded different.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Broken.

"Why are you calling?""

"Because I need to talk to you.""

"We talked at the wedding.""

"No.""

Her voice shook.

"We didn't.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"We fought.""

A pause.

"But we never talked.""

I leaned back.

"Vanessa, what do you want?""

"I want to know why you disappeared.""

I almost laughed.

"Why I disappeared?""

"Yes.""

"My father was humiliated.""

"I know.""

"And you stood there.""

"I know.""

"You laughed.""

Her breathing changed.

"Michael...""

"Did you?""

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I did.""

I closed my eyes.

At least now she wasn't pretending.

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

That answer made me angry.

"You don't know?""

"No.""

Her voice became smaller.

"I saw my mother upset. I saw everyone staring. I panicked.""

"So you laughed.""

"I shouldn't have.""

"No.""

I looked out the window.

"You shouldn't have.""

She was quiet.

Then she said:

"My mother told me something after you left.""

"What?""

"She said you know.""

My body went still.

"Know what?""

Another pause.

"About Richard.""

The air left my lungs.

"How does your mother know I know?""

"Because she knows.""

I stood up.

"Vanessa, what exactly does your family know?""

"I don't know.""

The answer frustrated me.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

"I swear, Michael.""

Her voice cracked.

"I really don't know everything.""

I wanted to believe her.

That was the problem.

Part of me still remembered the woman I loved.

The woman who held my hand when I lost my job.

The woman who stayed with me when I took care of my father after his surgery.

The woman who wasn't always Diane Whitmore's daughter.

She was Vanessa.

But then I remembered the wedding.

And the way she looked at my father.

"I need to ask you something.""

"Okay.""

"Did your mother ever talk about my father?""

Silence.

Too much silence.

"Vanessa.""

"Yes.""

My heart tightened.

"What did she say?""

"She said he was a disgrace.""

I gripped the phone.

"Anything else?""

"She said he stole something from our family.""

"What?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at the documents on my table.

My mother's secret.

The missing evidence.

Richard's warnings.

Everything connected.

"Vanessa.""

"Yes?""

"Did you know my father and your family had history?""

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

Her answer was immediate.

And for some reason...

I believed her.

Maybe not completely.

But enough.

"I need to find out what happened.""

"I know.""

"And I don't know if I can trust you.""

The silence hurt.

"I understand.""

I expected anger.

Instead, she whispered:

"I deserve that.""

After we hung up, I sat there for a long time.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

Stop searching for Richard Whitmore.

My heart started beating faster.

Another message came.

You don't know what your mother discovered.

Then another.

And you don't know who is protecting the truth.

I stared at the screen.

My fingers went cold.

Because whoever sent those messages knew.

They knew I was looking.

They knew about Richard.

They knew about my mother.

I typed:

Who are you?

The reply came immediately.

Someone who tried to save your mother.

I stared at those words.

May you like

Then the final message appeared.

Meet me if you want to know why Arthur Bennett lied to you.
