Chapter 28: The Father I Never Knew

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

I couldn't even process the words.

Arthur Bennett is not your father.

The sentence didn't feel real.

It felt like something from someone else's life.

Someone else's nightmare.

Because my entire identity was built around one truth.

Arthur was my father.

Not because of biology.

Because he was there.

Because he raised me.

Because he taught me how to ride a bike.

Because he stayed awake when I was sick.

Because he worked until his hands cracked so I could have shoes that fit.

Because when my mother died, he became everything I had left.

And now Sarah was standing in front of me, telling me that even that truth had been incomplete.

I looked at her.

"Who?""

My voice sounded strange.

"Who is my real father?""

Sarah didn't answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Because if the answer was simple, she would have said it.

Instead, she looked like she was preparing to destroy the last piece of my childhood.

"Michael...""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"I need the name.""

Sarah swallowed.

"Richard Whitmore.""

The world stopped.

I actually laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"No.""

Sarah looked at me.

"Yes.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Richard Whitmore was my enemy.""

"He was.""

"He tried to destroy my family.""

"He did.""

"Then he can't be my father.""

Sarah's eyes softened.

"Those things can both be true.""

I hated that sentence.

Because everyone kept using it.

Life was becoming a place where two opposite things could exist at the same time.

A person could love you and hurt you.

A person could betray you and save you.

A person could be your father and your enemy.

I looked at Sarah.

"You're lying.""

She didn't react.

"Why would I lie?""

"To hurt Arthur.""

A painful expression crossed her face.

"I spent years blaming Arthur.""

She looked down.

"I don't anymore.""

I thought about the letter.

My mother's words.

Arthur did not fail me.

He saved the person I loved most.

My son.

"How do you know?""

Sarah reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"This.""

I took it.

Inside was a DNA report.

My hands shook.

I didn't want to read it.

But I did.

The name was there.

Richard Whitmore.

Probability of biological relationship: 99.9%.

I stared.

The paper blurred.

Not because I couldn't see.

Because I didn't want to.

"Why?""

The question came out broken.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Sarah looked at me.

"Because your mother knew what Richard was becoming.""

"What?""

"She knew his obsession with power.""

"Then why stay with him?""

"Because she thought she could change him.""

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

Always trying to save people.

Always believing there was good hidden somewhere.

"What happened between them?""

Sarah sighed.

"Richard loved your mother.""

I looked at her.

"Really?""

"Yes.""

I almost hated hearing that.

Because it made everything worse.

"If he loved her, why did he hurt her?""

"Because love and possession became the same thing to him.""

The words were heavy.

"After you were born, Richard changed.""

"Why?""

"Because he discovered your mother planned to leave him.""

"With me.""

Sarah nodded.

"Yes.""

"And Arthur helped.""

"Yes.""

I remembered everything.

The garage.

The accident.

The secrets.

Arthur wasn't hiding that he wasn't my biological father.

He was hiding because he was the man who chose to become my father.

But there was one thing I needed to know.

"Did Arthur know?""

Sarah looked away.

"Yes.""

The answer hurt.

"All these years?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

"Because your mother begged him not to.""

I closed my eyes.

Again.

My mother's voice.

My mother's choices.

Everyone kept protecting her wishes.

But nobody understood the cost.

"Where is Richard now?""

Sarah's expression changed.

"Closer than you think.""

A chill moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Before she answered, my phone rang.

Arthur.

I picked up.

"Michael.""

His voice was urgent.

"Where are you?""

"With Sarah.""

Silence.

Then:

"Leave.""

My heart tightened.

"What?""

"Leave now.""

"Why?""

A pause.

Then Arthur said:

"Because she isn't the one you should be afraid of.""

I looked at Sarah.

"Who?""

Arthur's voice became quiet.

"Michael...""

The connection crackled.

Then he said:

"Richard is alive.""

My blood froze.

"What?""

The call ended.

I looked at Sarah.

She wasn't surprised.

"You knew.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is he?""

Sarah looked toward the church entrance.

And slowly...

A figure appeared in the doorway.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Richard Whitmore.

My biological father.

The man whose name had haunted my entire life.

The man everyone blamed.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

He looked at me.

And the first words he said were not an apology.

Not an explanation.

They were:

"I know what Arthur told you.""

I couldn't breathe.

"And I know what Sarah told you.""

May you like

He stepped closer.

"But neither of them told you the whole truth.""
