Chapter 25: The Night My Father Made His Choice

The call ended.

But Sarah's words remained.

Ask your father what happened the night he chose to save you instead of your mother.

I stood there holding the phone long after the screen went dark.

Because one sentence had done something no secret had managed to do.

It created doubt.

Not the kind of doubt that came from anger.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that came from fear.

I looked at Arthur.

My father.

The man who had been my entire world.

He knew.

I could see it.

Whatever Sarah was talking about...

Whatever happened that night...

He knew.

"Dad.""

He didn't answer.

"Dad, look at me.""

Slowly, he raised his eyes.

And the sadness in them told me everything.

"You know what she's talking about.""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The word landed harder than any lie.

I stepped back.

"What happened?""

Arthur remained silent.

"What happened that night?""

His hands trembled.

"Michael...""

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"I need you to understand something.""

I pointed toward the door.

"I can handle the truth.""

A pause.

"But I cannot handle another secret.""

He looked at me.

And for the first time, he didn't try to protect me.

He told me.

"Your mother was not supposed to die that night.""

I waited.

"She was supposed to leave.""

My heart tightened.

"Leave?""

He nodded.

"She had a plan.""

"What plan?""

"To take you and disappear.""

The words shocked me.

"Why?""

"Because she knew Richard was dangerous.""

I frowned.

"But she didn't.""

Arthur looked down.

"Because something changed.""

"What?""

His voice became quieter.

"Sarah found out.""

I felt cold.

"My aunt?""

"Yes.""

"She knew your mother was leaving?""

"Yes.""

"What did she do?""

Arthur took a deep breath.

"She convinced your mother to meet her.""

"Why?""

"She said she had proof.""

I shook my head.

"Proof of what?""

"That Richard wasn't the only threat.""

I stared.

"Then what happened?""

Arthur looked away.

"I followed them.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't trust Sarah.""

The answer surprised me.

"Then why didn't you stop them?""

His face changed.

"Because I was too late.""

Silence.

"I arrived after the crash.""

I froze.

"Like you said before.""

He nodded.

"But there was something I never told you.""

"What?""

Arthur looked at me.

"Your mother was still alive.""

The room disappeared.

I couldn't hear anything.

"What?""

He looked broken.

"She was alive when I reached the car.""

I felt tears forming.

"My mother...""

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

His face collapsed.

"Because I had to choose.""

The words cut through me.

"Choose?""

He nodded.

"The car was burning.""

I stopped breathing.

"Your mother was trapped.""

A pause.

"And you were unconscious in the back seat.""

I covered my mouth.

"You were there?""

"Yes.""

Arthur's voice shook.

"I pulled you out first.""

I stared at him.

"And my mother?""

He couldn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The silence was enough.

"You left her.""

The words came out quietly.

Arthur cried.

"I tried to go back.""

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

"Why?""

His answer destroyed me.

"Because the car exploded.""

I froze.

"I watched it happen.""

The room became silent.

"My mother...""

Arthur nodded.

"She was gone.""

I looked away.

The pain was too much.

Because suddenly I understood Sarah's words.

You chose to save you instead of your mother.

Technically...

She was right.

But something still bothered me.

"Why did Sarah blame you?""

Arthur wiped his face.

"Because she believed I should have saved your mother first.""

"And did you?""

"No.""

The honesty hurt.

"Why?""

He looked at me.

"Because you were my son.""

I couldn't speak.

"You were nine years old.""

His voice broke.

"You were scared.""

A tear fell.

"And your mother looked at me before I pulled you out.""

"What did she say?""

Arthur closed his eyes.

"She said, 'Take him.''"

My heart broke.

"She chose me.""

"Yes.""

My father nodded.

"She chose you.""

The truth was painful.

But it was also something else.

It was love.

My mother didn't die because my father abandoned her.

She died because she gave him a choice.

And he chose me.

But there was still one question.

"Then why did you hide this?""

Arthur looked at me.

"Because Sarah was right about one thing.""

"What?""

"If people knew your mother was alive when I arrived...""

He paused.

"They would ask why I survived.""

The accusation.

The suspicion.

The endless questions.

I understood.

But I hated that he carried it alone.

"What happened to Sarah after that?""

Arthur's expression changed.

"She disappeared.""

"Why?""

"Because she blamed herself.""

I frowned.

"She was involved?""

He nodded.

"She was the one who convinced your mother to come.""

"But she didn't kill her?""

"I don't know.""

The uncertainty returned.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Sarah.

You finally know what happened.

Now ask your father what he did after.

I looked at the screen.

Then at Arthur.

"What did you do after my mother died?""

His face turned pale.

May you like

And I realized...

The crash wasn't the only secret.
