Chapter 13: The Meeting I Was Never Supposed to See

I drove without knowing where I was going.

Again.

It was becoming a pattern.

Every time I thought I had finally reached the truth, another secret appeared.

Another hidden conversation.

Another person who knew more than me.

Another piece of my life that had been decided without my permission.

But this time was different.

Because this time, the person at the center of the mystery wasn't Richard Whitmore.

It wasn't Diane.

It wasn't even my mother.

It was Arthur.

My father.

The man who had raised me.

The man whose hands had fixed everything in my life except the pain I was feeling now.

I wanted to believe Vanessa was wrong.

I wanted to believe she misunderstood.

I wanted to believe there was a reasonable explanation.

But my father had always taught me one thing.

The truth doesn't change because you don't like it.

So I drove back to his house.

The garage light was on.

Of course it was.

I stood outside for almost five minutes.

A part of me wanted to walk away.

A part of me wanted to pretend I never heard what Vanessa told me.

Because if I opened that door...

I might lose the last person I trusted.

But I had already learned what secrets did.

They didn't protect relationships.

They poisoned them slowly.

I opened the door.

My father was sitting at his workbench.

He wasn't repairing anything.

He was just staring at an old photograph.

A photograph of my mother.

When he saw me, he immediately knew something was wrong.

"Michael.""

I walked inside.

"You met Diane.""

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

And that hurt.

"You knew.""

He looked down.

"I knew you would eventually find out.""

My chest tightened.

"Why does everyone keep saying that?""

He looked at me.

"Because secrets don't stay buried forever.""

"Then why bury them?""

He had no answer.

Not immediately.

Finally, he said:

"Because sometimes the truth destroys the wrong people.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone says.""

I placed the note on the table.

His eyes moved to it.

And I saw fear.

Real fear.

"You gave this to me.""

"No.""

"You know what it means.""

He didn't speak.

"Dad.""

The word made him look up.

"You need to tell me.""

He sat down.

For a long moment, the only sound was the ticking clock on the wall.

Then he whispered:

"I met Diane because of your mother.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Explain.""

"After your mother died, I needed answers.""

"So you went to Diane?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard was gone.""

He looked at the photograph.

"And Diane was the only person who knew how deep his secrets went.""

I crossed my arms.

"Then why did Vanessa see you meeting her?""

My father froze.

"Vanessa saw us?""

I nodded.

"At an old warehouse.""

His face changed.

And suddenly, I knew.

He knew the place.

"You've been there.""

It wasn't a question.

He looked away.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because that's where your mother's evidence was hidden.""

The answer hit me.

"What?""

My father stood.

"Michael, listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice rose.

"I am tired of listening while everyone explains why they lied.""

He stopped.

"Where is it?""

"What?""

"The evidence.""

He looked at me.

"I thought it was gone.""

"But it wasn't.""

Silence.

Then my father slowly walked to the back of the garage.

Behind an old shelf was a small metal box.

I had never seen it before.

He brought it forward.

My hands felt cold.

"You had this the whole time?""

He nodded.

"Why?""

"Because I wasn't sure who I could trust.""

The answer hurt.

"Not even me?""

His face broke.

"Especially not you.""

I stared.

"Why?""

"Because you were the person everyone would use.""

That stopped me.

"What do you mean?""

He opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Records.

And one envelope.

My name was written on it.

Michael.

My heart stopped.

"Your mother wrote that.""

I picked it up.

"What does it say?""

"I never opened it.""

"Why?""

"Because it was meant for you.""

My fingers shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

My dear Michael,

If you are reading this, then Arthur made the hardest decision of his life.

He protected you.

Please never mistake that for keeping you in the dark.

Your father loved you more than anyone.

I stopped.

The tears came instantly.

Your father.

She called Arthur my father.

Not Richard.

Arthur.

I continued.

But there is something you must understand.

The night I died, I learned something terrible.

Richard was not acting alone.

Someone inside his own family helped him.

Someone who wanted control.

Someone who wanted power.

Someone who believed I was a threat.

I looked at my father.

"Who?""

He didn't answer.

I continued reading.

Michael, the person who betrayed me is someone who has always been close to you.

Someone you would never suspect.

My heart pounded.

Then the final line appeared.

The person who destroyed our family is not the person who left.

It is the person who stayed.

I dropped the letter.

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, everything changed.

My father looked at me.

And for the first time...

I saw fear.

May you like

Not because he was hiding something.

Because he knew what I was thinking.
