Chapter 15: The Relative Who Was Erased
I stared at the photograph.
The man in the image looked familiar.
Not because I had met him often.
Because I had seen him everywhere.
At charity events.
In newspaper articles.
In photographs with the Whitmore family.
His name was everywhere.
But somehow, nobody had ever mentioned that he was connected to my mother.
"Who is he?""
My father looked at the photograph.
"Daniel Carter.""
I repeated the name quietly.
Daniel Carter.
My mother's brother.
The man who supposedly didn't exist.
"Why was he erased?""
My father sat down.
"Because your mother wanted to protect you.""
"From him?""
He nodded.
"Daniel was involved with Richard.""
I felt sick.
"How?""
"Richard built his empire with help.""
"And Daniel helped him?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph again.
A man standing near the accident.
Watching.
Not helping.
Watching.
"Why didn't my mother tell me?""
"Because you were nine.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
A child didn't need to know about betrayal.
A child didn't need to carry the weight of adults' mistakes.
But now I did.
Now I carried all of it.
"Where is Daniel now?""
My father hesitated.
"Michael...""
"Where?""
"He changed his name.""
"Why?""
"Because he was never supposed to be found.""
I looked at him.
"But he was.""
My father nodded.
"Yes.""
"By who?""
His answer came quietly.
"By you.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Your wedding.""
I didn't understand.
"Diane recognized Arthur.""
"Yes.""
"And she knew the truth would come out.""
"Yes.""
"But Daniel?""
My father looked at the photograph.
"He has been watching your family for years.""
A chill moved through me.
"Why?""
"Because you are the last connection to your mother.""
I stared.
"I don't understand.""
"Your mother left something behind.""
"The evidence?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"Something else.""
"What?""
My father looked at me.
"Something Daniel wants.""
Before I could ask, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
"Hello?""
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"Michael Bennett.""
My body went still.
"Who is this?""
"You've been asking the wrong questions.""
I stood.
"Who are you?""
A quiet laugh.
"You sound like your mother.""
The world stopped.
Nobody said that.
Nobody could say that.
"Daniel?""
Silence.
Then:
"Good.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"You found the name.""
I gripped the phone.
"What do you want?""
"What your mother had.""
"I don't have anything.""
"You do.""
I looked at my father.
The color had disappeared from his face.
"You have her memory.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
The voice became colder.
"Your mother hid the final piece with the person she trusted most.""
My eyes moved to Arthur.
No.
Not again.
"Who?""
A pause.
Then:
"Ask your father.""
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
My father looked terrified.
"What did he say?""
I didn't answer.
Because I was tired of being between two impossible choices.
Trust the man who raised me.
Or believe the man who shared my blood.
But maybe the truth was worse.
Maybe both men were hiding something.
"Where is it?""
My father looked confused.
"Where is what?""
"The final piece.""
He became silent.
And that silence was enough.
"Dad.""
He looked at me.
"What did my mother leave behind?""
His lips parted.
But before he could answer...
A loud crash came from outside.
We both turned.
The garage window shattered.
Glass fell everywhere.
My father pushed me down instantly.
A sound exploded through the room.
A gunshot.
For a few seconds, there was nothing.
No thoughts.
No questions.
Only silence.
Then I heard my father's voice.
"Michael.""
I looked up.
He was holding his shoulder.
Blood spread across his shirt.
"Dad!""
I rushed toward him.
But he pushed me back.
"Get out.""
"What?""
"Get out now.""
Another shadow moved outside the broken window.
Someone was watching.
Someone had followed me.
Someone knew we were close to the truth.
My father grabbed my arm.
And with pain in his eyes, he whispered:
"The final piece isn't hidden.""
I stared at him.
"Then where is it?""
His answer was barely audible.
"Your mother gave it to someone she trusted.""
A pause.
"Someone who was at your wedding.""
My blood turned cold.
"Who?""
My father looked toward the window.
May you like
And said the name I never expected.
"Vanessa.""
