Chapter 20: The Woman Who Tried to Save My Mother

I played the recording again.

And again.

Each time, I heard something different.

The fear in my mother's voice.

The desperation in Diane's.

The way neither woman sounded like enemies.

They sounded like two people trapped in something bigger than themselves.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Where did your grandmother get this?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Why did she keep it?""

"Because she believed my mother was trying to help yours.""

I stared at the recorder.

The entire image of Diane Whitmore was changing.

The woman who had humiliated my father.

The woman who had raised Vanessa.

The woman I believed was cruel.

Maybe she was.

But maybe she was also someone who had spent years hiding guilt.

"Vanessa.""

"Yes?""

"Did your mother know my father?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

"How well?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at her.

"Everyone says they don't know.""

She lowered her eyes.

"I deserve that.""

The answer disarmed me.

She wasn't defending herself.

She wasn't making excuses.

She was accepting the damage.

"Where is Diane now?""

Vanessa looked nervous.

"At home.""

"We need to talk to her.""

"Michael...""

"We need answers.""

She nodded.

"I'll take you.""

The Whitmore estate looked different when I returned.

Before, I saw wealth.

Power.

Success.

Now I saw a fortress.

A place built to hide things.

Diane was waiting in the library.

She wasn't surprised.

"I knew this day would come.""

I placed the recorder on the table.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"You found it.""

"You knew about it?""

She looked at Vanessa.

"Yes.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Then explain.""

Diane sat down.

For the first time, I didn't see a powerful woman.

I saw someone tired.

"Your mother and I were friends.""

I froze.

"Friends?""

She nodded.

"Before Richard.""

"Before everything.""

She looked at the recorder.

"Your mother was the only person who ever saw me as more than a Whitmore.""

I listened.

"She knew what my family was doing.""

"She knew about Richard.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you stop him?""

The question came out harder than I intended.

Diane looked down.

"Because I was a coward.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I thought I could control him.""

She shook her head.

"I thought I could fix my family from inside.""

"And?""

"I failed.""

Silence.

"Your mother found evidence.""

"Yes.""

"She wanted to expose Richard.""

"Yes.""

"But you stopped her.""

Diane looked at me.

"I tried to save her.""

The words echoed.

"I told her to leave.""

"Why didn't she?""

"Because she believed if she ran, Richard would hurt someone else.""

My mother's courage hurt.

She wasn't fearless.

She was willing to be afraid for the right reason.

"Who killed her?""

Diane's face changed.

"I don't know.""

I stepped closer.

"Someone does.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then back to me.

"The person who benefited the most.""

My mind raced.

"Richard?""

"No.""

"Daniel?""

"No.""

"Then who?""

Diane whispered:

"Arthur.""

My body went still.

Again.

"No.""

Diane looked at me sadly.

"I know what you want to believe.""

"You don't know my father.""

"I knew him before you did.""

The words cut.

"Explain.""

She took a breath.

"Your father loved your mother.""

"I know.""

"But love doesn't make people innocent.""

My fists tightened.

"Are you saying he killed her?""

"No.""

The answer was immediate.

That confused me.

"What are you saying?""

Diane looked toward the window.

"I'm saying Arthur knows who did.""

My heart pounded.

"Then why hide it?""

"Because he promised your mother.""

"Promised what?""

Diane's voice dropped.

"That he would never tell you the truth.""

"Why?""

"Because your mother believed you would try to destroy yourself trying to find justice.""

I looked away.

Because maybe she was right.

I had spent days doing exactly that.

Diane continued.

"But Arthur made another mistake.""

"What?""

"He thought protecting you meant protecting the person your mother was trying to expose.""

The room went silent.

"Who?""

Diane looked at me.

"The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.""

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No greeting.

Just a voice.

"You finally understand.""

My blood turned cold.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"The person who saved you.""

I looked at Diane.

At Vanessa.

At the entire family that had surrounded me with secrets.

"Daniel?""

A quiet laugh.

"No.""

My heart stopped.

"Then who?""

The answer came softly.

"Your mother.""

The call ended.

And everyone in the room froze.

May you like

Because that voice...

Was impossible.
