Chapter 1: The Woman Who Answered

The first SUV arrived eleven minutes after I called Zoe.

The second came thirty seconds later.

By then, Lily's fingers had gone numb around my neck, and I had wrapped my thin sweater around her as tightly as possible. The November wind swept through the Petersons' quiet Chicago street, rattling the bare branches overhead.

I could still hear laughter from inside the house.

They had apparently returned to dinner.

My daughter had been slapped, her mother had been thrown out, and the Petersons had gone back to eating pumpkin pie.

That was the kind of family I had married into.

Then the headlights illuminated the sidewalk.

A black Cadillac Escalade stopped directly in front of the brownstone. Behind it, a second black SUV pulled to the curb.

Zoe Bennett stepped out.

She wore a camel-colored coat, black leather gloves, and the expression of a woman who had just discovered somebody had made a very expensive mistake.

She looked at Lily first.

Then she looked at me.

"Oh, Chloe.""

Her voice changed.

"Who touched her?""

I swallowed.

"Megan.""

Zoe's jaw tightened.

"Your sister-in-law?""

"Yes.""

"Where is she?""

"Inside.""

Zoe removed her gloves slowly.

"Good.""

A tall man emerged from the second SUV. I recognized him immediately. Daniel Brooks, Zoe's chief operating officer and the attorney who had handled several complicated business matters for our company.

Behind him came another woman carrying a leather briefcase.

Zoe turned to Daniel.

"Get the documentation.""

Daniel nodded.

"Already downloaded.""

I frowned.

"Zoe, what are you doing?""

She looked at me as if she couldn't believe I was asking.

"Making sure nobody gets to rewrite what happened tonight.""

I shifted Lily in my arms.

"She slapped a five-year-old.""

"I heard you the first time.""

Zoe gently touched Lily's uninjured cheek.

"Sweetheart, can you tell me if anything hurts?""

Lily shook her head.

"Only my face.""

Zoe closed her eyes briefly.

Then she looked at me.

"We're taking her somewhere warm. After that, we're dealing with this.""

Before I could answer, the front door opened.

Mark stood in the doorway.

His expression was somewhere between irritation and disbelief.

"What is this?""

Zoe didn't answer immediately.

She looked at him.

Then at the house.

Then at me.

"Mark Peterson, I presume?""

He frowned.

"Who are you?""

"Someone your wife called because her five-year-old daughter was assaulted in your parents' home.""

Mark's face reddened.

"That's a family disagreement. You don't need to get involved.""

Zoe laughed once.

"A family disagreement?""

"Look, Megan lost her temper. It happens.""

"Does it?""

Mark glanced at Daniel.

"Who are these people?""

I answered before Zoe could.

"These are the people who actually showed up.""

His expression hardened.

"Chloe, don't do this.""

I stared at him.

"Do what, Mark? Ask somebody to help our daughter?""

"You're making a scene.""

Zoe stepped forward.

"No. You made the scene when you watched your sister hit your child and then asked your wife to apologize.""

Mark's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

From inside, Carol appeared.

She was holding a dessert plate.

"What is all this noise?""

Then she noticed the vehicles.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Chloe, I thought we told you to leave.""

Zoe turned toward her.

"Interesting. You threw the mother of an injured child out into freezing weather?""

Carol lifted her chin.

"Nobody injured anyone. Megan was disciplining a badly behaved child.""

Zoe stared at her.

"Say that again.""

Carol blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"Say exactly what you just said.""

Frank appeared behind his wife.

"Whoever you are, this is private property. You need to leave.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mr. Peterson, we're not here to enter your property. We're here to make sure Chloe and Lily are safe.""

Carol looked at me.

"Who did you bring here?""

I held Lily closer.

"People who won't pretend they didn't see what happened.""

For the first time, Carol seemed uncertain.

Zoe turned toward Daniel.

"Did you bring the folder?""

"Yes.""

"Then give it to Chloe.""

Daniel handed me a thick manila envelope.

I looked down at it.

"What is this?""

Zoe's expression softened.

"Something I should have told you about months ago.""

Mark stepped off the porch.

"What does she mean?""

Zoe ignored him.

"Chloe, remember when you asked me to review the Peterson Foundation's financial structure?""

My stomach tightened.

Six months earlier, Zoe had asked me to examine several financial statements connected to a charitable foundation run by Frank Peterson.

I was a senior financial compliance director. It was part of my job to recognize irregularities in complicated financial records.

I had noticed something unusual.

Several donations appeared to have been transferred through shell companies before reaching their stated destinations.

I had mentioned it to Zoe.

She had told me to stop investigating because her legal team was already reviewing the matter.

I hadn't thought about it since.

"Yes," I whispered.

Zoe nodded.

"Those irregularities weren't accounting mistakes.""

Mark stepped closer.

"What foundation?""

Frank's face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Zoe saw it too.

"Peterson Family Foundation," she said.

Carol's dessert plate slipped in her hand.

"That has nothing to do with tonight.""

"Actually," Zoe replied, "it has everything to do with tonight.""

Frank's voice became sharp.

"You're making allegations without understanding the situation.""

Daniel opened the folder.

"We have the bank records, transfer authorizations, and correspondence.""

Frank went pale.

Mark looked between them.

"Mom? Dad?""

Carol recovered first.

"These people are trying to intimidate us.""

Zoe shook her head.

"No. I'm trying to prevent a much bigger problem from becoming public before the proper authorities have the evidence.""

She turned toward me.

"Get Lily somewhere warm. I'll explain everything tomorrow.""

I nodded.

But as I climbed into the SUV, I heard Frank say something that made my blood run cold.

"She doesn't know about the other account, does she?""

Zoe stopped.

Slowly, she turned around.

"What other account, Frank?""

Nobody answered.

May you like

And then Mark said the one thing that made me realize my marriage was built on a lie.

"Mom, you promised Chloe would never find out.""
