Chapter 9: Martha’s Final Move
Martha Bennett did not call.
She did not apologize.
She did not explain.
She disappeared.
And somehow, that was more frightening.
People like Martha didn't disappear because they gave up.
They disappeared because they were planning.
For five days, nothing happened.
No threats.
No mysterious calls.
No surprise visitors.
The silence almost felt worse.
Because I knew Martha.
Not because I understood her.
Because I had spent nine years watching her.
She was never quiet without a reason.
Nick noticed it too.
"She's waiting.""
We were sitting in our apartment.
The same apartment where we had once planned our future.
Now every conversation felt like a strategy meeting.
"Waiting for what?""
He looked at me.
"For us to make a mistake.""
I hated that he was right.
But I also hated something else.
I was becoming like her.
Watching.
Calculating.
Expecting betrayal.
That wasn't who I was.
I was Emily Carter.
The girl who believed people were good until they proved otherwise.
The girl who worked every weekend to help her mother.
The girl who loved a boy because he made her laugh.
I refused to let Martha turn me into someone bitter.
Then Vanessa called.
I almost didn't answer.
Almost.
But curiosity won.
"Hello?""
Silence.
Then:
"Emily.""
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Vanessa.""
"I need to talk to you.""
I almost laughed.
"Why?""
"Because you deserve to know the truth.""
I looked at Nick.
He immediately understood.
I put the call on speaker.
"What truth?""
Vanessa sighed.
"The truth about Martha.""
Nick stepped closer.
"You expect us to believe you?""
"No.""
Her answer surprised us.
"I expect you not to.""
A pause.
"But you should listen anyway.""
I stayed silent.
Vanessa continued.
"Martha never wanted me because she loved me.""
"Then why?""
"Because she wanted a family alliance.""
I already knew that.
But Vanessa's next words changed everything.
"She also wanted me because I knew something about her.""
Nick frowned.
"What?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Something she was afraid would come out.""
"What?""
"That she was involved in your father's death.""
The room went completely still.
I stopped breathing.
"What did you say?""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"I said Martha Bennett knows more about what happened the night your father died than she admits.""
I looked at Nick.
His face had gone pale.
"My father died of illness.""
Vanessa was quiet.
Then:
"Are you sure?""
The call ended before we could ask more.
I stood frozen.
Because there was one thing I knew.
Vanessa was not someone I trusted.
She had spent years trying to replace me.
But desperate people sometimes tell the truth for selfish reasons.
And Vanessa sounded desperate.
That evening, Nick received an envelope.
No name.
No return address.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of my father outside a building.
The date was written on the back.
The same night he supposedly became sick.
On the back were four words.
Ask Martha what happened.
I looked at Nick.
Neither of us spoke.
Because suddenly the biggest question wasn't what Martha had done twenty-five years ago.
May you like
It was what happened the night my father died.
And why everyone had worked so hard to make sure I never asked.
