Chapter 13: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not Nick.

Not even Martha.

The photograph sat on the table between us like a bomb waiting to explode.

Because it wasn't just a picture.

It was proof.

Proof that the story we had all believed for decades was wrong.

Nick's father was alive the night everyone thought he had disappeared.

My father was standing beside him.

And Martha Bennett had known.

I picked up the photograph with shaking hands.

The image was old, slightly faded around the edges.

But the faces were clear.

My father.

Thomas Bennett.

And behind them, the building from the picture Vanessa had sent us.

The same building.

The same night.

The same secret.

"Where did you get this?""

My voice sounded different.

Colder.

Martha watched me carefully.

"From someone who wanted the truth protected.""

I looked at her.

"You expect me to believe you?""

"No.""

Her answer surprised me.

"Because I know you have no reason to trust me.""

For the first time, Martha sounded almost human.

Almost.

But I remembered everything.

The insults.

The manipulation.

The scissors.

The way she looked at me like I was something that needed to be corrected.

I wasn't going to forget because she finally decided to reveal a piece of the truth.

Nick stepped closer to the table.

"Where is my father?""

Martha didn't answer.

His jaw tightened.

"You know.""

Silence.

"You know where he is.""

She looked away.

And that was enough.

Nick's entire expression changed.

For his whole life, he believed he had been abandoned.

He believed his father walked away.

He believed he wasn't worth staying for.

And now Martha was standing there with the possibility that she had stolen the truth from him.

"Tell me.""

His voice was quiet.

But I knew Nick.

Quiet Nick was dangerous.

Loud anger burned quickly.

Quiet anger stayed.

Martha looked at him.

"Your father made choices.""

"What choices?""

"Choices that affected everyone.""

Nick laughed bitterly.

"You mean choices that made your life harder?""

Her face hardened.

"Watch your words.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Not anymore.""

I had never seen him speak to her like that.

Not even after everything.

And I realized something.

The reason Martha feared losing control wasn't because she wanted to win.

It was because she had never experienced someone refusing to obey her.

"What happened that night?"" I asked.

Martha looked at me.

"Your father discovered the truth.""

"What truth?""

She walked toward the window.

"The truth about Thomas.""

Nick froze.

"My father?""

Martha nodded.

"Your father wasn't innocent.""

The words landed heavily.

I hated that part of me wondered if she was telling the truth.

Because the truth was rarely simple.

Good people made mistakes.

Bad people sometimes told the truth.

That was what made secrets so dangerous.

"What did Thomas do?""

Martha looked at the photograph.

"He was going to expose me.""

"Then why say he wasn't innocent?""

Her eyes moved to me.

"Because he was involved before he tried to stop it.""

The room became silent.

Nick stared at the floor.

I knew that feeling.

The feeling of discovering someone you loved had a hidden side.

It was painful.

But it didn't mean everything good about them disappeared.

"Explain," Nick said.

Martha sighed.

"Twenty-five years ago, your father and Emily's father worked together.""

"We know.""

"No.""

She looked at us.

"You know the version they wanted you to know.""

She pointed at the photograph.

"They were investigating financial crimes connected to my family.""

I frowned.

"Investigating?""

"Yes.""

"Then why were they together?""

"Because they became partners.""

That didn't make sense.

"My father was trying to expose you.""

"Eventually.""

The word made my stomach drop.

"Eventually?""

Martha nodded.

"Before that, they were both involved.""

Nick stared at her.

"Involved how?""

Martha didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation was terrifying.

"They helped build the company.""

"What company?""

"The one my family lost.""

I looked at her.

"You're saying my father helped you?""

"No.""

She looked directly at me.

"I'm saying your father knew more than he admitted.""

That hurt.

Because my father had always been my example of honesty.

The person I trusted most.

I wanted to reject it.

But I couldn't.

Not without knowing.

"What did my father hide?""

Martha reached into the box again.

She pulled out another document.

"This.""

I took it.

It was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

My heart dropped.

Emily,

If you are reading this, something went wrong.

I couldn't breathe.

Martha watched me.

"He wrote that the night he disappeared.""

I read the next line.

I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people.

My hands started shaking.

The letter continued.

But there is one thing I never regretted.

Protecting you.

I stopped.

Because that was my father.

Even when everything was falling apart, he was thinking about me.

I kept reading.

Martha believes she can control the truth. She cannot. But she can hurt people who search for it.

My eyes moved down.

The evidence is not where she thinks it is.

It is where Emily's first memory lives.

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Martha smiled slightly.

"I was hoping you would figure that out.""

Nick looked at her.

"You brought us here because you need something.""

Her smile disappeared.

Smart.

Always smart.

"Yes.""

"What?""

She looked at me.

"I need you to find it first.""

I frowned.

"Find what?""

"The evidence your father hid.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Why would I help you?""

Martha stepped closer.

"Because if you don't...""

She paused.

"Someone else will.""

The lights suddenly flickered.

Then went out.

For a moment, the house went completely dark.

May you like

And when the lights returned…

Martha was gone.
