Chapter 5: The Photograph That Exposed Her
I stared at the photograph for a long time.
Too long.
Because sometimes your mind needs time to accept something your eyes already understand.
The picture showed three people standing outside a building.
My father.
Nick's father.
And Martha.
They looked younger.
Different.
Before the years had changed their faces.
Before secrets had turned them into strangers.
My father was smiling.
That was what hurt the most.
Because he looked happy.
Like he trusted the people standing beside him.
And one of those people had spent nine years trying to destroy my confidence.
"Where did you get this?""
My voice barely came out.
Nick pulled out a chair.
"I found it in my father's old files.""
I looked at him.
"You knew my father was connected to your family?""
He shook his head.
"Not until yesterday.""
"Yesterday?""
Nick looked down.
"I was searching through everything after Claire gave me the information.""
I felt something twist inside me.
Again.
Another secret.
Another discovery.
Another moment where I wondered how much everyone had known before I did.
"Nick.""
He looked at me.
"I need you to understand something.""
"What?""
"I wasn't hiding this from you because I didn't trust you.""
"Then why?""
His silence answered before his words did.
Because he was afraid.
I hated that answer.
Not because I didn't understand it.
Because I understood it too well.
Fear was the reason people kept secrets.
Fear of losing someone.
Fear of changing everything.
Fear of facing the truth.
But secrets still hurt.
"Tell me everything.""
Nick nodded.
"My father kept records of business deals from years ago. After Claire came forward, I started looking through them.""
He opened the folder.
"There were references to your father.""
I picked up another paper.
It was a copy of a document.
My father's name was there.
Along with Nick's father's.
And Martha's.
"What was this?""
Nick looked serious.
"A partnership agreement.""
My mother leaned closer.
"Between them?""
Nick nodded.
"Yes.""
My mother's expression changed.
She knew something.
"You knew about this.""
It wasn't a question.
She looked away.
"Only part of it.""
I felt betrayed.
"Mom.""
She sighed.
"Your father told me enough to worry me. Not enough to explain everything.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you were twelve years old.""
The anger inside me softened.
Because she was right.
I was a child.
I had already lost my father.
My mother was trying to keep me alive emotionally.
But now?
Now I was an adult.
And I needed the truth.
"What happened between them?""
Nick answered.
"We don't know everything yet.""
I looked at him.
"Yet?""
He hesitated.
"There are missing documents.""
Of course there were.
With Martha Bennett, there was always something hidden.
"What did Claire say?""
Nick leaned back.
"She said Martha wasn't just involved in the business betrayal.""
My stomach dropped.
"What else?""
"She believes Martha destroyed evidence.""
My mother covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
"You knew?""
"No.""
Her voice was immediate.
"I didn't know that.""
Nick continued.
"Claire spent years trying to prove what happened. But every time she got close, something disappeared.""
"And Martha?""
"Always walked away untouched.""
I looked at the photograph again.
My father had been close enough to know.
Maybe close enough to help.
Maybe close enough to be dangerous.
A terrifying thought entered my mind.
"What if Dad was going to expose her?""
Nick looked at me.
"That's what I think.""
The room went silent.
My father had died from illness.
That was what everyone believed.
But suddenly I wondered...
Had he been carrying something heavier than anyone knew?
My mother stood quickly.
"No.""
We looked at her.
She looked frightened.
"I don't want you going down this path.""
"Mom.""
"No, Emily.""
Her voice cracked.
"I lost your father. I cannot lose you too.""
The words hit me.
Because underneath all the fear was love.
She wasn't trying to stop me.
She was trying to protect me.
But I couldn't ignore what was happening.
Martha had attacked me on my wedding day.
She had humiliated me.
And now I was discovering that she had a history of destroying people's lives.
I couldn't pretend anymore.
"I need answers.""
Nick reached for my hand.
This time, I didn't pull away.
"I know.""
I looked at him.
"But no more secrets.""
He nodded immediately.
"No more.""
The next morning, we met Claire.
She chose a quiet coffee shop far from our neighborhood.
A place where nobody knew us.
When she arrived, she carried a small bag.
"I brought something.""
She placed it on the table.
Inside was an old journal.
"This belonged to your father.""
My heart stopped.
"My father?""
She nodded.
"He gave it to me before everything happened.""
I stared at her.
"Why would he give it to you?""
Claire looked down.
"Because he trusted me.""
That answer raised even more questions.
"What happened between you and my father?""
Claire was quiet for a moment.
Then she said:
"Your father was the only person who believed me.""
I opened the journal.
The first page had my father's handwriting.
And one sentence written across the top.
If anything happens to me, find Emily and tell her the truth.
My hands went cold.
Nick looked at me.
Claire whispered:
"Your father knew Martha would come after anyone who threatened her.""
I turned the page.
And there it was.
A name.
A name I had never seen before.
May you like
A name that would change everything.
Vanessa Whitmore.
