Chapter 27: The Last Safe Place

We left the house within minutes.

Nobody argued.

Nobody questioned.

Because for the first time, everyone understood the same thing.

The enemy wasn't hiding anymore.

They knew.

They knew we had the final piece.

They knew the evidence existed.

And they knew exactly who had it.

Me.

The drive back to the bakery felt different.

Before, we were searching for answers.

Now we were running from them.

My mother sat beside me in silence.

I could feel her looking at me.

Finally, she spoke.

"I should have told you.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you?""

She looked down.

"Because your father asked me not to.""

That surprised me.

"He asked you?""

She nodded.

"He knew if you knew too early, you would become a target.""

I laughed quietly.

"I became a target anyway.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"And I have regretted it every day.""

I reached for her hand.

Because despite everything...

she was still my mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who protected me.

The woman who carried a secret alone because she believed it was the only way.

When we reached the bakery, something felt wrong.

The lights were on.

But nobody was there.

Nick immediately moved in front of me.

"Stay behind me.""

I almost argued.

Then I stopped.

Because for the first time in days, I understood.

Protecting each other didn't mean controlling each other.

It meant choosing each other.

We entered carefully.

Nothing was broken.

Nothing was stolen.

That scared me more.

Someone had been here.

Someone wanted us to know.

On the counter was a package.

My name.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was the old wooden hairbrush my father used when I was a child.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew this brush.

My mother kept it after he died.

It was supposed to be gone.

But here it was.

With a note.

You have been looking in the wrong place.

I turned the brush over.

And saw it.

A tiny mark.

The same symbol.

The Circle.

My mother gasped.

"They found it.""

"What?""

She pointed.

"The brush.""

I stared.

"The device is inside.""

Richard stepped closer.

"How?""

My mother touched the wood.

"Your father modified it.""

Carefully, she opened a hidden section.

Inside was a small object.

Not a recording.

Not documents.

A storage chip.

The final evidence.

Everyone stared.

Twenty-five years.

Everything came down to this.

Then my phone rang.

Martha.

I answered.

"Emily.""

Her voice was urgent.

"You need to leave.""

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"It does.""

"No.""

A pause.

"Listen to me. They don't want the evidence.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"They want the person who can unlock it.""

I looked at the chip.

"The evidence is encrypted?""

"Yes.""

"Who can unlock it?""

Silence.

Then Martha said:

"Your father.""

My heart stopped.

"He's alive?""

Another silence.

Long enough to be an answer.

"What aren't you telling me?""

Martha whispered:

"I saw him.""

Everyone froze.

"When?""

"Six months ago.""

"Where?""

"I can't tell you.""

"Why?""

"Because if I tell you, they will know.""

I gripped the phone.

"Martha, what is happening?""

Her voice cracked.

"The person hunting you isn't trying to destroy your father's evidence.""

A pause.

"They're trying to erase the only person who can prove it.""

"Who?""

Martha whispered:

"Thomas Bennett.""

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Because now we had another impossible truth.

Nick looked at me.

"My father is alive.""

Richard looked terrified.

"No.""

We turned.

He stared at the phone.

"That's not possible.""

"Why?""

Richard looked at the chip.

"Because Thomas was the only person who knew the encryption key.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

Richard's face turned pale.

"It means if Thomas is alive...""

A pause.

"Then someone else already has the key.""

The bakery lights suddenly went out.

Again.

But this time...

we heard someone inside.

A voice from the darkness.

"Emily.""

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It wasn't Martha.

It wasn't Thomas.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone we trusted.

Someone who had been helping us.

Someone who had been searching for the truth beside us.

Claire.

"Give me the chip.""

Nobody moved.

Nick stepped forward.

"Claire?""

The lights came back.

And she stood there.

Holding a weapon.

Tears running down her face.

"I'm sorry.""

I stared at her.

Because the person my father trusted...

was the person standing in front of us.

May you like

And for the first time since this nightmare began...

I wondered if we had ever truly known Claire Walker at all.
