Chapter 23: Claire’s Hidden Promise
Nobody spoke after I said her name.
Claire.
The person who had stood beside me.
The person who had helped me search.
The person my father trusted.
The person who had hidden something.
I looked at her.
She looked like she had been waiting for this moment.
Not hoping.
Waiting.
"You knew.""
Claire nodded.
The simplicity of her answer hurt.
"You knew all along.""
"I knew pieces.""
"Pieces?""
My voice rose.
"How many pieces?""
She looked down.
"Enough.""
Nick stepped forward.
"Enough to let us chase the truth while you watched?""
Claire looked at him.
"I wasn't watching.""
"Then what were you doing?""
"Keeping you alive.""
That answer made me angry.
Because it sounded exactly like everyone else.
Everyone thought they were saving us.
Everyone thought they knew better.
"You don't get to decide that.""
Claire nodded.
"I know.""
For the first time, she looked broken.
"I know I made mistakes.""
I held up my father's letter.
"He trusted you.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Claire looked at the handwriting.
"Because your father knew my father.""
We had heard this before.
But now there was something different.
Something she hadn't told us.
"My father wasn't just Martha's advisor.""
"What was he?""
Claire swallowed.
"He was the person who helped create the Circle.""
Silence.
"Then why would my father trust you?""
"Because I was the person who helped him destroy it.""
I stared at her.
"Explain.""
Claire sat down.
"My father spent years believing power was the same thing as protection.""
She looked at the floor.
"He thought controlling information prevented chaos.""
"Like Martha.""
"Yes.""
"But eventually he realized he had created something dangerous.""
I listened.
"He tried to leave.""
"And?""
"Martha stopped him.""
Of course.
"How?""
"She threatened me.""
The pattern again.
Secrets.
Fear.
Control.
Claire continued.
"My father gave your father the records.""
"The evidence.""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't he come forward?""
"Because the Circle wasn't just a group of families.""
She looked at us.
"It was connected to judges. Politicians. Business leaders.""
My stomach tightened.
"They had influence everywhere.""
Claire nodded.
"Your father knew exposing them could put innocent people at risk.""
"So he hid the evidence.""
"Yes.""
I looked at the letter.
"But why trust you?""
Claire smiled sadly.
"Because he knew I had something he didn't.""
"What?""
"Nothing left to lose.""
The room became quiet.
That sentence explained more than anything else.
Claire had been living with guilt for years.
She had lost her father.
Her family.
Her identity.
All because she helped reveal the truth.
"What did Martha want from you?""
Claire looked at me.
"The location of the evidence.""
"Did she know?""
"No.""
"Then why did she let you stay close to me?""
Claire's expression changed.
"Because she didn't know I was helping you.""
That made no sense.
"Then who did?""
Claire looked at the door.
My stomach dropped.
"Who?""
She whispered:
"Your mother.""
I looked at my mother.
She closed her eyes.
"You knew?""
My mother nodded.
"I knew Claire was trying to help.""
The betrayal hit differently this time.
Not because they lied.
Because they had built an entire world of secrets around me.
My entire life had been a room full of locked doors.
And everyone had the keys except me.
"How long?""
My mother answered softly.
"Since before your wedding.""
I froze.
"Before?""
"Your father left instructions.""
"What instructions?""
"To watch over you.""
I looked at Claire.
"And Martha?""
Claire's expression darkened.
"She knew someone was helping you.""
"Who?""
"She didn't know.""
"Then why was she so afraid?""
Claire looked at me.
"Because she finally realized your father planned for everything.""
I thought about the letter.
The hidden rooms.
The evidence.
The messages.
My father wasn't just leaving clues.
He was leaving a path.
A path that led me here.
Then Richard entered the room.
His face was pale.
"We have a problem.""
Everyone turned.
"What happened?""
He held up his phone.
"The Circle knows about the notebook.""
My heart dropped.
"How?""
Richard looked at Claire.
"No.""
She shook her head immediately.
"I didn't.""
Richard looked away.
"Then someone else found out.""
Nick grabbed the notebook.
"What do they want?""
Richard's expression was serious.
"The last page.""
I frowned.
"What last page?""
He looked at me.
"The page your father tore out.""
Silence.
"What page?""
Richard answered:
"The page with the name of the person who ordered the attack.""
My heart stopped.
"Where is it?""
Richard looked at the hidden room.
"Your father didn't hide it.""
I waited.
"He gave it to someone.""
"Who?""
Richard looked at me.
"The only person he believed would never betray him.""
My mother whispered:
"Emily.""
Everyone looked at me.
And I understood.
My father hadn't hidden the final truth.
He had trusted someone to carry it.
Someone who had spent twenty-five years protecting it.
May you like
Someone who had been beside me my entire life.
My mother.
