Chapter 24: The Final Page

My mother didn't deny it.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She didn't look surprised.

She didn't look confused.

She simply looked tired.

Like she had known this moment would come.

"You have it.""

It wasn't a question.

My mother looked at me.

"Yes.""

Nick stared.

"Where?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she walked to the old wooden cabinet beside the bakery counter.

The same cabinet my father built.

The same cabinet we searched before.

She opened the bottom drawer.

Then removed a small envelope.

Twenty-five years.

Twenty-five years she had kept it.

She placed it on the table.

"I wanted to destroy it.""

Everyone froze.

"What?""

My mother touched the envelope.

"Because this page destroyed our family.""

I looked at her.

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"Because your father trusted me.""

Slowly, she handed it to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The paper inside was old.

The handwriting was my father's.

But unlike the other letters...

this one was different.

It wasn't a goodbye.

It was evidence.

At the top was one sentence.

The person who ordered everything is not the person everyone suspects.

I kept reading.

Martha Bennett is responsible for many crimes.

But she is not the architect.

My heart raced.

The architect.

The person behind everything.

The name was below.

I stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Everyone recognized it.

Nick stepped closer.

"What?""

I looked at him.

Then handed him the page.

His face changed.

"No.""

He read it again.

"No.""

Because the name written there was impossible.

It was someone we had trusted.

Someone connected to all of us.

Someone who had been part of the story from the beginning.

Thomas Bennett.

Nick's father.

I looked at Richard.

He looked devastated.

"Impossible.""

My mother whispered:

"Your father believed the same thing.""

I looked at the page.

It explained everything.

Thomas had not been a victim.

He had been the bridge between families.

He helped create the Circle.

He helped Martha gain power.

He helped hide the truth.

And when he realized what he created...

he tried to escape.

But escaping wasn't the same as fixing it.

"Why did he disappear?""

Richard answered quietly.

"Because he knew Martha would eventually destroy him.""

Nick looked broken.

"So he ran.""

"Yes.""

"Leaving me behind.""

Richard didn't answer.

Because there was no defense for that.

The hardest truth wasn't always evil.

Sometimes it was cowardice.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

No greeting.

No introduction.

Just a voice.

Older.

Male.

"Emily.""

I knew immediately.

Thomas.

Nick stood.

"Father?""

A pause.

Then:

"Nicholas.""

The sound of his father's voice broke something in him.

"Where are you?""

Silence.

Then Thomas said:

"I need to see you.""

Nick's voice shook.

"After twenty-five years?""

"I know.""

"Do you know what you did?""

Another pause.

"I know.""

The anger in Nick's face was painful to watch.

"You left me.""

"I know.""

"You let me hate you.""

"I know.""

"Why?""

Thomas was silent for so long I thought he hung up.

Then:

"Because I was trying to protect you from becoming like me.""

Nobody moved.

The words were heavy.

Because maybe that was the truth.

Maybe Thomas wasn't innocent.

But maybe he wasn't the monster everyone believed either.

"Where are you?""

Nick asked.

Thomas gave an address.

Then said:

"Come alone.""

The call ended.

Nick immediately grabbed his jacket.

"No.""

I stopped him.

He looked at me.

"I need answers.""

"I know.""

"But?""

I looked at the final page.

At the years of lies.

At everything that had been taken from us.

"Don't go alone.""

He looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the sixteen-year-old boy who waited outside my classroom.

The boy who chose me before anyone else.

Then he nodded.

Together, we left.

But when we arrived at the location Thomas gave us...

there was no Thomas.

Only a room.

A table.

And a final message.

Written in my father's handwriting.

Nick picked it up.

I watched his face change.

"What?""

He handed it to me.

The message contained only one sentence.

I was wrong about Thomas.

The truth was never about who betrayed us.

It was about who they were protecting.

And beneath that sentence was another name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Martha Bennett.

May you like

But not as the enemy.

As the person my father was trying to save.
