Chapter 12: Martha’s Last Invitation
The invitation arrived in a plain envelope.
No return address.
No explanation.
Just my name.
Emily Carter.
The handwriting was elegant.
Perfect.
Martha's handwriting.
Inside was a single card.
You want the truth.
Come alone.
The old Bennett property.
Midnight.
I read it three times.
Nick took it from my hand.
"No.""
I looked at him.
"You didn't even think about it.""
"I don't need to.""
"It's a trap.""
"Yes.""
"Then why would she invite me?""
"Because she wants something.""
I nodded.
"Exactly.""
Nick looked frustrated.
"Emily.""
I understood his fear.
I really did.
But this wasn't only about danger anymore.
It was about control.
Martha had spent years deciding what people knew.
What they believed.
What they were allowed to say.
And for the first time, I had something she wanted.
The truth.
"I'm going.""
Nick immediately shook his head.
"Absolutely not.""
"I didn't say I was going alone.""
The room became quiet.
Because he knew.
I was asking him to trust me.
Not protect me.
Trust me.
After a long silence, he nodded.
"Then we go together.""
The old Bennett property sat outside town.
It had been abandoned for years.
At least, that's what people believed.
When we arrived, the gate was already open.
That was the first warning.
The second was the lights.
Someone had prepared for us.
The house looked exactly like the past.
Old.
Beautiful.
And hiding something.
We entered slowly.
"Martha?""
No answer.
Then a voice came from upstairs.
"You're late.""
She appeared at the top of the staircase.
Calm.
Composed.
Like she hadn't invited us there in the middle of the night.
Like she wasn't the reason my entire world had changed.
"You said come alone.""
I said.
She looked at Nick.
"He was always your weakness.""
Nick stepped forward.
"No.""
Martha smiled.
"Still defending her.""
"Always.""
Something about that answer hurt her.
Because she realized something.
Nick was no longer hers to control.
"You don't understand what you're doing.""
Martha walked downstairs.
"You think this is about me losing?""
She laughed softly.
"This is about all of you losing.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
She looked at me.
"Your father was not the only person who kept secrets.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
She smiled.
"Ask Nick.""
I turned.
"What?""
Nick looked confused.
"I don't know what she's talking about.""
Martha's smile widened.
"Of course you don't.""
She walked to an old cabinet.
Opened it.
And removed a small box.
My breath caught.
Because I recognized it.
Wooden.
Old.
With a brass lock.
The same kind as my father's box.
She placed it on the table.
"Your father hid something.""
I stepped closer.
"What is that?""
"The reason he died.""
Silence.
Nick looked at her.
"You're lying.""
Martha looked at him.
"You really think I would bring you here without proof?""
She opened the box.
Inside was a document.
And a photograph.
She placed them on the table.
I reached for the photograph first.
And when I saw it…
I couldn't breathe.
Because it showed my father.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was someone I never expected.
Someone who changed everything.
Nick's father.
Alive.
On the night everyone believed he had disappeared.
May you like
And on the back of the photograph were five words.
The truth was never buried.
