Chapter 15: The Betrayal Nobody Expected
I stared at the photograph.
My mother.
With Martha.
The same night my father disappeared.
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.
Not Nick.
Not the rain outside.
Not even my own breathing.
Because the person I trusted most was suddenly connected to the person I trusted least.
No.
I refused to believe it.
Not my mother.
Not the woman who raised me alone.
Not the woman who sacrificed everything for me.
"This is fake.""
The words came out before I even thought.
Nick didn't answer.
And that hurt.
Because his silence meant he didn't know.
I looked at him.
"Say something.""
He looked at the photograph.
"I don't know.""
Again.
That answer.
But this time, I understood.
Because he was seeing his own family fall apart too.
We went straight to my mother.
She was sitting in the bakery apartment upstairs.
And when she saw the photograph...
she cried.
Not confusion.
Not anger.
Recognition.
That was the worst part.
"You knew.""
Her face collapsed.
"Emily.""
"You knew this existed.""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
I felt something inside me crack.
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"I was trying to protect you.""
I shook my head.
"Everyone says that.""
"I mean it.""
"Then explain.""
My mother looked at Nick.
Then at the photograph.
"That night, your father asked me to meet Martha.""
I froze.
"He asked you?""
She nodded.
"Why?""
"Because he knew Martha would come after me.""
My voice lowered.
"After you?""
My mother wiped her tears.
"Your father had discovered something.""
"What?""
"That Martha wasn't working alone.""
The room changed.
Because suddenly the story wasn't about one person.
It was about a group.
A network.
People protecting each other.
"Who else?""
My mother looked at me.
"I don't know.""
"Mom.""
"I swear.""
She looked broken.
"Your father told me one thing.""
"What?""
"He said if anything happened, I should never trust the person who appears to be helping.""
My mind went back to the letter.
The person you think is helping you.
My mother continued.
"After your father died, Martha came to me.""
"What did she want?""
"The documents.""
"Did she find them?""
"No.""
"Did you tell her where they were?""
"No.""
I believed her.
Because my mother had spent years suffering.
Not living.
Surviving.
But there was still something missing.
"Why are you in the photograph?""
She looked down.
"Because I was trying to save your father.""
My heart stopped.
"What happened that night?""
My mother took a shaky breath.
"Your father wasn't supposed to be alone.""
She looked at Nick.
"Neither was Thomas.""
Nick leaned forward.
"What does that mean?""
My mother whispered:
"That night was a meeting.""
"Between who?""
"Your father. Thomas. Richard.""
I felt cold.
"And Martha?""
"She wasn't invited.""
Silence.
"Then why was she there?""
My mother looked at the photograph.
"Because someone told her.""
Someone.
The word echoed.
Someone betrayed them.
Someone close.
Someone they trusted.
Then my mother said the one thing that changed everything.
"I think it was Vanessa's father.""
Nick looked shocked.
"What?""
My mother nodded.
"Helen Whitmore's husband.""
The Whitmores.
The family Martha wanted Nick connected to.
The family that had been part of the plan from the beginning.
I looked at Nick.
His face was pale.
"My mother knew.""
"Yes.""
"Vanessa knew.""
"Maybe.""
I stood.
"We need to find Vanessa.""
But before we could move, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time I answered.
No voice.
Just silence.
Then a recording played.
My father's voice.
A message recorded twenty-five years ago.
"If you are hearing this, it means Martha found the evidence.""
I froze.
Nick grabbed my hand.
My father's voice continued.
"But there is one thing she doesn't know.""
A pause.
"Emily is the only person who can reveal the truth.""
My heart stopped.
Then came the final sentence.
"The person who betrayed us is closer than you think.""
The recording ended.
And for the first time…
May you like
I wasn't looking for Martha Bennett's secret.
I was looking for the person standing beside us all along.
