Chapter 18: The Evidence That Changed the Story
Richard Hale did not come inside immediately.
That bothered me.
A person who carries the truth for twenty-five years should not hesitate at the door.
But Richard did.
He stood there staring at the bakery like he was looking at a grave.
"You knew my father.""
I said.
He nodded.
"He was my friend.""
"Then why didn't you come sooner?""
Pain crossed his face.
"Because I failed him.""
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Nick opened the door wider.
"Come in.""
Richard stepped inside.
He placed the key on the table.
"This is the last thing your father gave me.""
I looked at it.
A small silver key.
Nothing special.
Except it had survived twenty-five years.
"What does it open?""
Richard looked at me.
"Something Martha never found.""
We followed him to the hidden room beneath the bakery.
When Richard saw it, he closed his eyes.
"He did it.""
My heart tightened.
"What?""
"He trusted you.""
Richard touched the wall.
"Your father always said Emily would find the truth when she was ready.""
I looked away.
Because hearing people talk about my father like that made his absence feel fresh again.
Richard pulled out a small box from inside his coat.
"This is what I kept.""
Inside was a flash drive.
And an old recording device.
Nick frowned.
"Technology from twenty-five years ago?""
Richard smiled sadly.
"Your father believed paper could disappear.""
He looked at the drive.
"But truth could be copied.""
We connected it.
The first file was labeled:
Meeting.
The date matched the night my father died.
I pressed play.
The recording started with voices.
My father's voice.
Thomas Bennett's voice.
And Martha's.
I froze.
She was there.
The entire time.
My father's voice was tense.
"You don't understand what you've done.""
Martha answered.
"I understand perfectly.""
Thomas said something we couldn't hear.
Then Martha spoke again.
"You both think you can destroy me.""
My hands tightened.
My father's voice:
"We have proof.""
A pause.
Then Martha laughed.
"Do you?""
Silence.
Then:
"Because the evidence you think you have...""
Another pause.
"...is incomplete.""
The recording crackled.
Richard leaned closer.
"Keep listening.""
Martha continued.
"You don't understand the system.""
My stomach turned.
The same arrogance.
The same belief that she was untouchable.
"People like us don't lose.""
My father answered:
"People like you always think that.""
Then there was a loud noise.
A crash.
Someone shouted.
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
"That's it?""
Nick asked.
Richard nodded.
"That's all I recovered.""
"But what happened after?""
Richard looked at me.
"Your father survived that night.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"He came home.""
I stared.
"Then why...""
Richard looked down.
"Because the next day, someone tried to kill him.""
The room went silent.
My father didn't die because of illness.
He died because someone wanted him gone.
My knees felt weak.
"Who?""
Richard looked at the folder.
"We never proved it.""
"But you have a suspicion.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
Richard looked at Nick.
Then at me.
"Thomas Bennett.""
Nick stepped back.
"No.""
Richard held up his hand.
"Listen.""
"No.""
"Your father believed Thomas was involved.""
My mind raced.
Thomas.
The man who disappeared.
The man Nick had just learned never abandoned him.
The man who was supposed to be a victim.
"What did he do?""
Richard looked at the recording.
"Thomas wasn't the person who attacked your father.""
"Then why blame him?""
"Because he knew who did.""
A terrible silence filled the room.
Richard continued.
"And he chose silence.""
Nick looked devastated.
Because now even his father had become complicated.
The recording wasn't over.
There was one more file.
Richard opened it.
The screen showed a name.
Not Martha.
Not Thomas.
Not Whitmore.
Someone else.
Someone none of us expected.
I stared at the name.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the person who had been hiding the truth for twenty-five years...
was someone who had been helping us find it.
Claire Walker.
Richard whispered:
"She wasn't the person Martha was afraid of.""
He looked at me.
"She was the person Martha was protecting herself from.""
And suddenly, the one person who had brought the truth to our doorstep...
became the person we had to question next.
