Chapter 25: The Enemy Who Needed Saving
For a long time, I couldn't move.
I just stood there holding my father's message, reading the same sentence until the words stopped making sense.
The truth was never about who betrayed us.
It was about who they were protecting.
And beneath it…
Martha Bennett.
As the person my father was trying to save.
My first reaction was anger.
Not confusion.
Not disbelief.
Anger.
Because after everything Martha had done, after years of humiliation, cruelty, and manipulation, I couldn't understand how my father could possibly believe she deserved saving.
The woman who cut my wedding braid.
The woman who spent nine years trying to convince Nick he had chosen the wrong woman.
The woman who turned every family gathering into a battlefield.
Save her?
Why?
"Emily.""
Nick's voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
He was staring at the message too.
His face was impossible to read.
Because this wasn't just about Martha for him.
It was about his entire life.
His mother.
His father.
His childhood.
Every memory he had was being rewritten.
"I don't understand.""
His voice was quiet.
"My father blamed her.""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
Richard stepped closer.
"Your father never blamed Martha for everything.""
"Then why did he write her name?""
"Because he knew the truth was more complicated.""
I hated that word.
Complicated.
Everyone kept using it like it made the pain easier.
It didn't.
"Explain.""
Richard looked at the message.
"Thomas and Martha were both part of the Circle.""
Nick's expression hardened.
"We know.""
"But they weren't the same.""
Richard sighed.
"Thomas believed power could be controlled.""
"And Martha?""
"Martha believed power was the only thing keeping her alive.""
The room became silent.
I thought about the Martha I knew.
The cold woman who never apologized.
The woman who looked at everyone like they were pieces on a chessboard.
But maybe that wasn't where she started.
Maybe that was what she became.
"What happened to her?""
Richard looked at me.
"Before she became Martha Bennett, she was Martha Collins.""
The name sounded strange.
Like he was talking about a completely different person.
"She grew up poor.""
Nick looked surprised.
"My mother?""
Richard nodded.
"Her family lost everything when she was young. She watched people with money destroy her parents' lives and walk away without consequences.""
I listened carefully.
Because for the first time, I wasn't hearing Martha's story from Martha.
"She promised herself she would never be powerless again.""
Richard continued.
"That promise became an obsession.""
"So she joined the Circle.""
"Yes.""
"And then she became worse than the people who hurt her.""
Richard didn't answer.
Because that was the truth.
Pain could explain someone's actions.
It could not excuse them.
"What did my father discover?""
Richard looked at the final message.
"He discovered Martha was planning to expose the Circle.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She wanted out.""
Nick shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
"No.""
Richard looked at him.
"That was the reason Thomas became afraid.""
"Why?""
"Because Martha knew everything.""
The room went quiet.
"The Circle trusted her with their secrets because they thought she belonged to them.""
Richard continued.
"But she was collecting evidence.""
"To destroy them?""
"Yes.""
I thought about the documents.
The recordings.
The hidden files.
Martha had evidence.
A lot of it.
But then why?
Why did she still act like them?
Why did she still hurt people?
"Because she was trapped.""
Richard looked at me.
"She couldn't expose them without destroying herself.""
I understood.
Almost.
"What does that have to do with my father?""
Richard sighed.
"Your father wanted to help her escape.""
Nick looked stunned.
"My father helped my mother?""
"Yes.""
"After everything?""
"Because your father believed people could become better than their worst choices.""
I looked down.
That sounded exactly like him.
My father always believed people were more than their mistakes.
Even when they didn't believe it themselves.
Then Claire spoke.
"There's something else.""
Everyone turned.
She looked nervous.
"I know where Martha is.""
Nick immediately looked at her.
"What?""
Claire reached for her phone.
"After the attack on the bakery, I tracked a location connected to one of her old accounts.""
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because I wasn't sure.""
I stared at her.
"You're starting to sound like everyone else.""
Claire accepted the criticism.
"I know.""
She showed us the address.
An old house outside the city.
Richard looked at it.
His face changed.
"She went there.""
"Where?""
"The place where this all started.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Nick grabbed his jacket.
"We're going.""
I looked at him.
"You sure?""
He nodded.
"No.""
That answer surprised me.
He looked at the address.
"But I spent my entire life wanting answers.""
A pause.
"Now I finally have a chance to get them.""
We drove there together.
No one talked.
The house sat alone at the edge of the woods.
Old.
Quiet.
Almost forgotten.
But when we entered...
we found Martha.
She wasn't hiding.
She was sitting in the living room.
Waiting.
The moment she saw Nick, her face changed.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Something else.
Regret.
"I knew you would come.""
Nick stared at her.
"Why?""
Martha looked at him.
"Because your father was always better at predicting people than I was.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Nick said the words I knew he had been waiting years to say.
"Did you know where he was?""
Martha looked down.
"Yes.""
The answer destroyed him.
"You knew?""
"Yes.""
"And you let me believe he abandoned me?""
Tears appeared in her eyes.
The first tears I had ever seen from her.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
Nick laughed bitterly.
"Everyone says that.""
"I know.""
Her voice cracked.
"But I was wrong.""
That was the first apology Martha Bennett had ever given.
And somehow…
it hurt more than her cruelty.
"Where is he?""
Martha looked at Nick.
"I don't know.""
The room went silent.
"What?""
"He contacted me once.""
"When?""
"Six months ago.""
My heart raced.
"What did he say?""
Martha looked at me.
"He said Emily had found the truth.""
I froze.
"He knew about me?""
Martha nodded.
"He knew you would be the one to finish what he started.""
Then she looked at Nick.
"And he left you something.""
"What?""
Martha reached into a drawer.
She pulled out a small envelope.
A letter.
For Nick.
His hands shook as he took it.
And before he opened it...
Martha whispered:
"Your father didn't leave because he didn't love you.""
A pause.
"He left because he loved you enough to disappear.""
Nick opened the letter.
And the first line changed everything.
May you like
My son,
The greatest mistake of my life was believing I could protect you by staying away.
