Chapter 8: The Stranger Who Knew My Father
The bakery door opened at 6:15 in the morning.
I remember the exact time because I had just finished unlocking the front door.
The sky was still gray.
The neighborhood was quiet.
And for a few seconds, I thought it was just another ordinary day.
Then I saw him.
An older man standing outside.
He looked exhausted.
Like he had spent years carrying something heavy.
"Emily Carter?""
My hand tightened around the door.
"Yes?""
He looked at the bakery sign.
Then back at me.
"My name is Daniel Hale.""
Everything inside me froze.
Hale.
The name from my father's journal.
The name connected to Richard.
The missing accountant.
I didn't answer.
The man noticed my reaction.
"I know what you're thinking.""
"Do you?""
He nodded.
"You're wondering why I waited so long.""
I didn't deny it.
"Why did you?""
His face changed.
Pain.
Regret.
Fear.
"Because I was afraid.""
Those words were becoming too familiar.
Everyone was afraid.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
But my father didn't.
My father had faced things.
At least, that was what I believed.
I stepped aside.
"Come in.""
He entered slowly.
A few minutes later, Nick arrived.
I had called him immediately.
When he saw Daniel, his expression changed.
"You found him.""
Daniel looked at Nick.
"You must be Nicholas.""
Nick nodded.
"How do you know me?""
Daniel gave a sad smile.
"Because your father talked about you.""
The room became silent.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded.
"He loved you.""
Nick looked away.
That simple sentence seemed to hurt him.
Because Nick had spent his entire life believing his father abandoned him.
Daniel reached into his bag.
He pulled out a folder.
"I should have come sooner.""
I looked at the folder.
"What is that?""
"Everything Richard collected.""
My heart started pounding.
"Your brother?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Richard was my father.""
I realized then.
Daniel Hale wasn't Richard.
He was his son.
"My father kept copies of everything before he disappeared.""
Nick opened the folder.
Inside were financial documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
Evidence.
The kind of evidence that could destroy someone.
Daniel looked at me.
"Your father tried to expose Martha Bennett.""
I swallowed.
"Why didn't he?""
"Because he realized exposing her would put people in danger.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked at Nick.
"Your family.""
Nick stared at him.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father discovered Martha had been manipulating everything around her.""
I looked through the documents.
There were transactions.
Names.
Dates.
And one detail that made my blood run cold.
A payment made shortly before Richard disappeared.
"Who received this?""
Daniel looked at the paper.
"Your mother.""
My head snapped up.
"What?""
"No.""
My mother couldn't be involved.
Not her.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"Not like that.""
I waited.
"Your mother received money from Martha.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because Martha threatened her.""
The room went quiet.
Nick looked at me.
"Emily...""
I grabbed my coat.
"I need to talk to my mother.""
My mother was at the bakery kitchen when I found her.
One look at my face and she knew.
"You know.""
I stopped.
That hurt.
Because she wasn't asking what I knew.
She knew.
"Mom.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
She looked down.
"I don't know.""
I laughed sadly.
"Everyone says that.""
She sat down.
"Martha came to me after your father died.""
My heart broke.
"What did she want?""
"She wanted information.""
"About Dad?""
My mother nodded.
"She knew your father had kept records.""
I felt dizzy.
"Did you give them to her?""
"No.""
The answer came instantly.
"I never betrayed your father.""
I believed her.
But I needed the rest.
"Then why did she pay you?""
My mother covered her face.
"Because she threatened you.""
Everything stopped.
"What?""
"She told me if I didn't cooperate, she would ruin your life.""
My voice shook.
"How?""
"She said she would make sure you never had opportunities. She would make sure people believed things about your father.""
I understood.
Martha wasn't just powerful.
She knew how to weaponize fear.
My mother looked at me.
"I thought I could handle her.""
"You shouldn't have had to.""
That was the first time I saw my mother cry because of guilt.
"I failed your father.""
"No.""
I held her hand.
"You protected me.""
But deep down, I knew something.
Martha had spent years controlling people through fear.
And now she had finally met someone who wasn't afraid.
Me.
When I returned to the bakery, Daniel was waiting.
He handed me one final document.
"This was the last thing your father wrote.""
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
Martha Bennett's greatest mistake will be believing Emily Carter is still the little girl she remembers.
My breath caught.
Because my father knew.
He knew she would come after me.
He knew this day would happen.
May you like
And somehow…
he believed I would be ready.
