Chapter 17: The Truth Behind Thomas Bennett
Finding out Thomas Bennett was alive was supposed to be impossible.
But impossible had become normal.
Every day brought another secret.
Another lie.
Another piece of a story that had been buried for decades.
That night, Nick didn't speak much.
He sat at the kitchen table holding the photograph of his father.
I knew what he was thinking.
Was he alive?
Did he choose to leave?
Was he forced?
Those questions were destroying him.
"I should have known.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"That something didn't make sense.""
"Nick.""
"He never said goodbye.""
His voice cracked.
"My father was many things, but he wasn't cruel.""
I sat beside him.
"You loved him.""
He nodded.
"And I spent my whole life hating him.""
That was the cruelest part of secrets.
They didn't just hide facts.
They changed relationships.
They stole years from people.
The next morning, Claire arrived.
When she saw Vanessa's documents, her expression changed.
"Where did you get these?""
"Vanessa.""
Claire looked surprised.
"She finally decided to tell the truth.""
"Do you trust her?""
Claire was quiet.
"No.""
That answer was honest.
"But I believe she is afraid.""
We spread the documents across the table.
Claire studied them carefully.
Then she found something.
"This.""
She pointed.
A location.
An old property.
"What is this?""
Claire's face changed.
"Thomas.""
Nick looked up.
"What about him?""
"That was one of his family properties.""
"You think he's there?""
"I think someone wanted people to think he was gone.""
That was enough.
We went.
The property was hidden far outside town.
An old cabin surrounded by trees.
When we arrived, nobody was there.
But the door was unlocked.
Inside was a single room.
A bed.
A table.
A stack of papers.
And a photograph.
Nick picked it up.
His hands started shaking.
Because it was a recent photograph.
Not twenty-five years old.
Recent.
Thomas Bennett.
Older.
Alive.
And beside him...
Martha.
But the date was only six months earlier.
Nick stared.
"No.""
I touched his shoulder.
He couldn't speak.
Then we heard a noise outside.
Footsteps.
Someone running.
Nick rushed to the door.
But whoever it was was already gone.
On the ground outside was a small envelope.
Inside was a letter.
To Nicholas.
My father’s handwriting.
No.
Thomas's handwriting.
Nick opened it.
Son,
If you found this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth.
Nick stopped.
Tears filled his eyes.
I looked away.
This wasn't my moment.
This was his.
He continued reading.
I never abandoned you.
I need you to know that first.
I believed protecting you meant staying away.
I was wrong.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Martha told me she would destroy you if I came back.
I believed her.
I thought distance was protection.
It wasn't.
It was another way I hurt you.
Nick covered his mouth.
The letter continued.
Your mother was never the only person making decisions.
There were others.
People with money.
People with influence.
People who believed they could control lives like they controlled businesses.
I looked at Claire.
She nodded.
The same people.
The letter ended with one sentence.
Find Richard Hale.
He knows who started everything.
Nick lowered the letter.
"He knew.""
I looked at him.
"He knew Richard was alive?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"He knew Richard knew the truth.""
We returned to the bakery.
And there was someone waiting.
Richard Hale.
The man everyone thought was gone.
The man whose evidence started everything.
He stood outside the bakery.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
I walked toward him.
"Why now?""
He looked at me.
"Because Martha made her biggest mistake.""
"What?""
Richard looked through the bakery window.
At the place where my father left his secrets.
"She underestimated you.""
Then he handed me a small key.
"The truth your father died protecting...""
He looked at Nick.
"...is not about money.""
A pause.
"It's about a crime.""
My heart stopped.
"What crime?""
Richard's expression darkened.
"The crime that destroyed three families.""
May you like
And then he said the name that changed everything.
"The night Emily's father died.""
