Chapter 7: The Warning Hidden in My Father’s Words
The call changed everything.
Before that moment, I believed I was searching for answers.
After that moment, I realized someone was searching for me.
The difference was terrifying.
I sat in the coffee shop staring at my phone while the world around me continued as if nothing had happened.
People laughed.
A couple argued quietly near the window.
A barista called out someone’s order.
Normal life.
But my life no longer felt normal.
Not after hearing that voice.
Not after someone used my father’s name as a weapon.
Nick sat across from me, his expression full of concern.
"Emily, say something.""
I looked at him.
"Someone knows.""
His face tightened.
"Knows what?""
"That I'm looking into Martha.""
Claire immediately reached for the journal.
"Did the person mention anything specific?""
I shook my head.
"Only my father.""
That changed her expression.
She looked genuinely frightened.
Not nervous.
Not worried.
Afraid.
"Claire?""
She looked at the journal.
"Your father was right.""
My stomach tightened.
"About what?""
"That if Martha ever felt threatened, she would do anything to protect herself.""
Nick leaned forward.
"Do you know who called?""
"No.""
"Could it have been Martha?""
Claire shook her head slowly.
"No.""
I looked at her.
"Why not?""
"Because Martha doesn't hide when she wants to intimidate someone.""
That was true.
Martha never whispered.
She never needed to.
She walked into rooms and made people feel smaller without saying much.
The person who called was different.
They were scared.
Which meant they had something to lose.
Nick took my hand.
"We need to be careful.""
I looked at him.
"Careful?""
"Yes.""
A strange sadness crossed his face.
"I know what you're thinking.""
"What?""
"That I'm asking you to step away.""
I didn't answer.
Because he was right.
Part of me wanted him to say exactly that.
Stop.
Forget this.
Go home.
Pretend none of this happened.
But another part of me knew I couldn't.
Because this wasn't just about Martha anymore.
It was about my father.
The man who taught me courage.
The man who told me never to let anyone make me feel small.
And someone had spent years hiding the truth from me.
I closed the journal.
"I'm not walking away.""
Nick looked at me.
"I knew you would say that.""
"Then why ask?""
"Because I needed to hear you choose it.""
That surprised me.
"What does that mean?""
He squeezed my hand.
"It means this time, we do it together.""
For the first time in days, I felt something besides pain.
Not relief.
Not happiness.
Something stronger.
Trust.
We spent the rest of the afternoon studying my father's journal.
Most entries were ordinary.
Notes about business.
People he met.
Ideas he had.
But scattered between them were warnings.
Small sentences.
Observations.
Things that seemed meaningless until you connected them.
Martha is careful with her words.
She never makes a promise she cannot use later.
People think kindness and weakness are the same thing.
They are not.
My father had understood Martha long before I did.
Then Claire found something.
"Wait.""
We all looked at her.
She pointed at a page.
"This.""
I moved closer.
There was a name.
Not Vanessa.
Not Martha.
Someone else.
Richard Hale.
"Who is that?""
Nick frowned.
"I don't know.""
Claire looked surprised.
"You don't?""
"No.""
She looked back at the journal.
"Your father trusted him.""
"Who was he?""
Claire hesitated.
"Richard was an accountant.""
I waited.
"There were financial records connected to Martha's family.""
Nick immediately understood.
"The missing money.""
Claire nodded.
"Richard helped track where it went.""
I looked at the page.
My father had written:
Richard has the evidence. If anything happens, he knows where the truth is.
My heart started racing.
"If anything happens?""
Claire nodded.
"Your father was preparing for something.""
Nick looked at me.
"And Richard disappeared.""
The room went silent.
"When?""
Claire answered.
"Twenty-five years ago.""
The same time everything happened.
The same time Nick's father left.
The same time my father started keeping secrets.
I closed my eyes.
It felt like I was standing in the middle of a puzzle where every missing piece was connected.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
My hands went cold.
Nick saw my face.
"What is it?""
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
Stop looking for Richard Hale.
I showed them.
Claire whispered:
"They know.""
Nick stood immediately.
"We're leaving.""
Outside the coffee shop, the three of us walked quickly.
I kept looking behind me.
Not because I saw anyone.
Because now I knew I was being watched.
When we reached the car, Nick stopped.
"Emily.""
I turned.
"What?""
He looked serious.
"There is something else.""
My heart sank.
"What?""
He took a breath.
"Martha came to see me last night.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Before the wedding situation became public.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
His face fell.
"Because I wasn't sure how to explain it.""
I stepped back.
"Nick.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
"What did she want?""
He looked away.
"She wanted me to leave you.""
My chest tightened.
"Why?""
"Because she said if I stayed with you, I would lose everything.""
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"Everything?""
Nick nodded.
"Her exact words were that she could destroy the life I built.""
I looked at him.
"And you didn't think I should know?""
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
He had no answer.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because even after everything, he was still protecting pieces of his family.
I walked toward the car.
"Emily.""
I stopped.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked back.
"I believe you.""
His expression softened.
"But I need you to understand something.""
"What?""
"If we're going to survive this, you can't protect me from the truth.""
He nodded.
"I won't.""
But neither of us knew that the truth was about to become much bigger than Martha Bennett.

Because the next morning, someone came to the bakery.
And they brought proof that my father's death was not the only thing Martha had lied about.
