Chapter 21: The Person Behind the Curtain
Martha's words stayed with me long after the call ended.
The person who has been helping you from the beginning.
Not watching.
Not following.
Helping.
That was somehow worse.
Because danger was easier to understand when it came from an enemy.
But what happened when the person guiding you toward the truth was also the person hiding the most important part?
I looked at Claire.
Then Richard.
Then Nick.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had been afraid.
But one person had been there since the beginning.
One person had known exactly where to lead us.
Claire.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Nick spoke.
"Was it you?""
Claire looked hurt.
"No.""
"Then who?""
She didn't answer.
That was enough to make me suspicious.
"Claire.""
She looked at me.
"I was trying to protect you.""
The words made my stomach twist.
"From what?""
"From knowing too much too quickly.""
I stared at her.
"That's not your decision to make.""
"I know.""
Her voice cracked.
"And I'm sorry.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Claire wasn't the only one hiding things.""
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?""
He sighed.
"Your father asked several people to protect you.""
"Protect me from what?""
"The truth.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
My voice became stronger.
"Everyone keeps using my protection as an excuse.""
I pointed toward the hidden room.
"My whole life was built on missing information.""
I looked at Nick.
"His whole life too.""
Then Claire.
"Everyone decided what we could handle.""
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew I was right.
I wasn't angry because people loved me.
I was angry because they loved me enough to lie.
Richard opened the notebook again.
"There is one name we haven't discussed.""
I looked.
At the bottom of the list.
A name crossed out.
"Who is that?""
Richard looked uncomfortable.
"Someone your father trusted.""
"Who?""
He slowly turned the notebook.
The crossed-out name became visible.
My blood froze.
Evelyn Carter.
My grandmother.
My own family.
"She was part of the Circle?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
"Then why is her name there?""
"Because your father suspected she knew more than she admitted.""
I sat down.
Every answer created another question.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From my grandmother.
Meet me tonight.
Alone.
I showed the others.
Nick immediately shook his head.
"No.""
I expected that.
"No one goes alone anymore.""
I looked at him.
"She's my grandmother.""
"She's also someone who hid for twenty-five years.""
That hurt.
Because it was true.
But I needed answers.
"We go.""
Richard looked at the message.
"Where?""
I showed him.
His expression changed.
"What?""
"Where is it?""
He pointed.
"The old Carter estate.""
I froze.
I had never been there.
My family sold it years ago.
The place where my grandfather built his fortune.
The place my father left behind.
The place nobody talked about.
We arrived after dark.
The estate looked abandoned.
But the front door was open.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one room.
The library.
Someone had cleaned it recently.
And someone was waiting.
My grandmother.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.
"Emily.""
I didn't move.
"I don't know whether to hug you or ask why you lied to me.""
She nodded slowly.
"I deserve that.""
That answer surprised me.
We sat together.
And for the first time, my grandmother told me everything.
The Circle started with families who believed wealth gave them the right to control everything.
My grandfather joined.
Thomas Bennett joined.
The Whitmores joined.
But my father left.
"He was the only one who saw what they became.""
My grandmother looked down.
"He wanted to destroy it.""
"What stopped him?""
She looked at me.
"Martha.""
"She killed him?""
"No.""
The answer came quickly.
"She wasn't strong enough.""
My heart stopped.
"Then who was?""
My grandmother's eyes filled with sadness.
"The person who knew your father best.""
I froze.
"Who?""
She looked at the doorway.
Nobody was there.
But her next words destroyed me.
"Your mother.""
The room went silent.
"No.""
My grandmother reached for my hand.
"Emily, listen.""
"No.""
I stood.
"Not my mother.""
"Your mother did not want him dead.""
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
My grandmother whispered:
"She made one decision that night.""
"What decision?""
"She chose who to save.""
The world seemed to stop.
"Who?""
My grandmother looked at me.
"She chose you.""
I couldn't breathe.
Because suddenly the question wasn't whether my mother betrayed my father.
It was what she sacrificed to keep me alive.
And somewhere in the darkness outside the old estate...
May you like
someone was listening.
Someone who had waited twenty-five years for the truth to come out.
