Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in Old Memories

Margaret refused to sit.

She stood near the window overlooking the empty garden outside.

The wedding decorations reflected in the glass behind her.

Beautiful.

Perfect.

Fake.

That was how the entire night felt now.

A beautiful picture hiding something rotten underneath.

“I have been part of this family longer than any of you,” Margaret said.

Her voice was controlled.

“I helped raise everyone in this room.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was true.

Margaret had always been the person everyone called when they needed advice.

She was the family historian.

The person who remembered birthdays.

The person who saved old photographs.

The person who told stories about our grandparents.

She didn’t seem like someone who would destroy her own family.

But then again…

Neither did Carter.

Neither did Rachel.

“I saw Aunt Margaret near the office,” Lily said softly.

Margaret turned.

“Sweetheart, you may have misunderstood.””

Lily looked down.

“I don’t think I did.””

That sentence shocked everyone.

Because Lily wasn’t accusing her.

She was simply telling the truth.

And somehow that made it stronger.

I knelt beside my daughter.

“Tell us exactly what happened.””

Lily thought carefully.

“I was looking for my coloring book.””

She looked at Margaret.

“I saw Aunt Margaret talking to Carter.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

But I noticed.

“What did they say?””

Lily shook her head.

“I couldn’t hear everything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did you hear?””

Lily whispered:

“I heard Aunt Margaret say…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Lily looked uncomfortable.

“She said, ‘You promised me.’”

The room went silent.

Margaret’s face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

And that was enough.

Daniel noticed.

“You said you had nothing to hide.””

Margaret looked at him.

“I don’t.””

“Then explain that conversation.””

She looked away.

“I can explain.””

Everyone waited.

But she didn’t continue.

My patience was gone.

“Then explain.””

Margaret turned toward me.

“You think I wanted this?””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She walked closer.

“I spent my whole life watching this family make decisions without me.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No?””

Her voice rose.

“You think I didn’t notice?””

Nobody spoke.

“You think I didn’t notice how your mother always trusted you more?””

My mother looked shocked.

“Margaret…”

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“I’m tired of pretending.””

The room became tense.

This wasn’t just about Carter anymore.

This was about years of resentment.

Old wounds.

Things nobody talked about.

“I gave everything to this family,” Margaret continued.

“And what did I get?””

Silence.

Because nobody knew how to answer.

Then Daniel said:

“Resentment is not an excuse for fraud.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“But I understand choices.””

He opened the folder again.

“And I understand that someone attempted to transfer property illegally.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

“I didn’t do that.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A woman walked in.

Rachel.

Everyone froze.

She looked different.

The confident woman from earlier was gone.

Her makeup was slightly ruined.

Her expression was terrified.

“Please.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Olivia immediately stood.

“You have some nerve coming back here.””

Rachel looked at her.

“I need to tell the truth.””

Carter stepped forward.

“Rachel, don’t.””

That one sentence changed everything.

Because why would he need to stop her?

Rachel looked at him.

“You already destroyed enough.””

Daniel watched carefully.

“Start talking.””

Rachel looked around.

Then she said:

“Carter didn’t plan this alone.””

Everyone already knew that.

But then she added:

“He wasn’t the person in charge.””

My heart sank.

“Who was?””

Rachel looked at Margaret.

The room went silent.

Margaret whispered:

“No.””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

Margaret stepped back.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She looked at Olivia.

“He promised us both the same thing.””

Olivia froze.

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“He promised that after everything was transferred, we would both get what we wanted.””

The words hit like a storm.

Everyone stared at Margaret.

Margaret looked around.

Searching for someone to defend her.

Nobody moved.

Then my mother stood.

“Margaret.””

The sadness in her voice was worse than anger.

“Tell me this isn’t true.””

Margaret looked at her.

And for several seconds…

She said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

My mother’s face fell.

“Why?””

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was tired of being invisible.””

Nobody spoke.

And then Daniel said the words nobody expected.

“That still doesn’t explain one thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The missing document.””

May you like

He turned toward Margaret.

“Where is it?””
