Chapter 14: The Name Hidden Inside the Recording
Daniel took the recorder into the sitting room.
Nobody wanted to return to the ballroom.
The celebration was over.
The guests were gone.
The flowers remained.
The lights still shined.
But the wedding was no longer a wedding.
It was a crime scene filled with people who once called each other family.
Daniel connected the recorder carefully.
“This may reveal who started everything.””
My father stood beside my mother.
Olivia sat quietly.
Margaret looked exhausted.
Carter refused to sit.
He stood near the wall, watching everyone.
I noticed something.
He wasn’t angry anymore.
He was calculating.
Like he was waiting for an opportunity.
Daniel pressed play.
At first, there was only silence.
Then voices.
A conversation.
Older than tonight.
A man’s voice.
A woman’s voice.
Everyone listened.
The first voice belonged to Carter.
“You said the documents would already be prepared.””
My heart tightened.
The second voice was harder to recognize.
“I said I would handle my part.””
Everyone looked at each other.
Daniel increased the volume.
The voice continued.
“You were supposed to marry Olivia and keep everyone distracted.””
Carter answered:
“And I did.””
A pause.
“But the girl became a problem.””
My entire body went cold.
The girl.
Lily.
My daughter squeezed my hand.
The unknown voice continued.
“She noticed too much.””
Carter sounded nervous.
“She’s a child.””
The voice replied:
“Children notice what adults ignore.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the voice said something that made everyone freeze.
“Especially children who have spent their whole lives watching people.””
My mother looked at Lily.
Because that was true.
Lily had always been observant.
Quiet.
Careful.
The recording continued.
Carter asked:
“What happens now?””
The voice answered:
“Now we remove the distractions.””
A pause.
“Olivia.””
“Margaret.””
“Rachel.””
The voice listed names.
Then:
“And finally, her mother.””
My blood ran cold.
Me.
The plan was never just about property.
It was about destroying all of us.
Daniel stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
“Play the rest,” my father said.
Daniel nodded.
The recording continued.
Carter asked:
“What about the child?””
A long pause.
Then the voice said:
“She won’t matter.””
I felt anger explode inside me.
But before I could say anything, Lily stepped closer to me.
Daniel immediately stopped the recording.
“We’ve heard enough for now.””
“No,” I said.
My voice shook.
“No, I want to know.””
Daniel looked at me.
I needed the truth.
Even if it hurt.
Especially if it hurt.
He continued.
The voice spoke again.
“She already proved useful.””
Everyone froze.
“Useful?””
Carter asked.
“Yes.””
The voice sounded calm.
“Let her discover the first secret.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
The recording continued.
“She will bring everything into the open.””
Nobody understood.
Then the voice said:
“And when everyone is fighting…”
A pause.
“We take what we came for.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
The meaning slowly became clear.
Lily finding the truth wasn’t an accident.
Someone expected her to discover something.
Someone wanted her to expose Carter, Rachel, and Margaret.
Because while everyone was focused on them…
Something else was happening.
Daniel looked at the recorder.
“The person behind this wanted a public collapse.””
My father frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel answered:
“Because chaos creates opportunities.””
Everyone became silent.
Then Olivia suddenly stood.
“I know who it is.””
All eyes turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
“Who?””
She looked at Carter.
“I heard him talking about someone.””
Carter’s face changed.
“Olivia.””
She ignored him.
“He said there was one person who could make everything happen.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
Olivia swallowed.
Then whispered:
“Someone from outside the family.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And said:
“The person who introduced Carter to me.””
Everyone froze.
Because none of us had ever questioned that.
We assumed Olivia met Carter by chance.
But she hadn’t.
Someone brought them together.
Someone created the connection.
Daniel looked serious.
“What was the name?””
Olivia closed her eyes.
Then answered:
“Ethan Walker.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But my father reacted instantly.
His face lost all color.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
“Dad?””
He looked terrified.
“Not him.””
Daniel noticed.
“You know this person?””
My father slowly nodded.
“I thought he was gone.””
“Who is he?””
My father looked at the recorder.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“The man who tried to destroy this family twenty years ago.””
