Chapter 22: The Ghost From My Father’s Past

The photograph sat on the table.

Nobody wanted to touch it.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to confirm what we were all thinking.

My father stared at it like he was looking at a memory he had spent twenty years trying to bury.

His face had lost all color.

“Impossible.””

The word came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

I looked at the photograph.

Then at my father.

“Dad…”

He didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Because for the first time that night, my father looked truly afraid.

Not nervous.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

Daniel picked up the photograph carefully.

“Who is this?””

Vanessa stood near the doorway.

The confident wedding planner was gone.

The woman standing there now looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

“My name is Vanessa Cole,” she said.

Nobody cared about her name.

Everyone wanted answers.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

“Who is the person in this picture?””

Vanessa looked at my father.

“Ask him.””

Everyone turned.

My father slowly sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“That’s impossible.””

“Dad,” I said.

He looked at me.

“That’s Ethan’s father.””

The room went silent.

Ethan frowned.

“My father?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

Nobody understood.

Ethan looked at the picture.

“I never met him.””

My father looked at him.

“That’s because you were told he disappeared.””

A chill ran through me.

“Disappeared?””

My father nodded slowly.

“Twenty years ago, after the business conflict, Ethan’s father vanished.””

Ethan stared.

“What are you saying?””

My father looked at him.

“I’m saying your father was never gone.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“He changed his name.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I discovered it while researching the old company records.””

My father looked at her.

“How?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because I was hired to find information about the family.””

Everyone froze.

“You were hired?””

She nodded.

“But not by Ethan.””

The room became tense.

“Who hired you?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

Then said:

“The person who wanted this wedding to happen.””

My heart raced.

“Olivia?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked confused.

“Then who?””

She took a breath.

“Your father.””

Everyone turned.

My father looked shocked.

“What?””

“You hired me.””

He stared.

“I never hired you.””

Vanessa pulled out a folder.

Inside were documents.

“I have proof.””

Daniel took them.

He examined the pages.

Then his expression changed.

“This signature…”

My father looked.

“That’s not mine.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Everyone froze.

“Then why did you say he hired you?””

“Because that’s what I was told.””

Daniel looked up.

“By who?””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“By someone pretending to be Robert.””

My stomach tightened.

Another fake.

Another setup.

Another person using my father’s identity.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“This connects everything.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?””

“You weren’t the only person manipulated.””

Daniel looked around the room.

“Everyone here was.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you disappear?””

She swallowed.

“Because I realized the wedding wasn’t the target.””

“What was?””

She looked at Lily.

“The truth.””

Everyone became silent.

Vanessa continued.

“I started noticing strange things during the planning.””

“Like what?””

“Changes to the guest list.””

“Private meetings.””

“Requests for access to rooms that had nothing to do with the wedding.””

Daniel nodded.

“Who made those requests?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then answered:

“Someone using Robert’s name.””

My father closed his eyes.

He finally understood.

Someone had been controlling the story from the beginning.

Making everyone believe they were acting independently.

Vanessa opened the folder.

“I found this.””

She removed a document.

“This was hidden in the wedding planning files.””

Daniel took it.

“What is it?””

“A list.””

“A list of what?””

She looked at everyone.

“Every person involved.””

My heart sank.

Daniel read the first few names.

Carter.

Rachel.

Margaret.

Vanessa.

My mother.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

He looked shocked.

“What is it?””

Daniel turned the paper.

At the bottom was one more name.

A name nobody expected.

My father.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He looked devastated.

“I didn’t write that.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Everyone stared.

“Then why is his name there?””

She answered:

“Because the person behind this wanted everyone to believe Robert was responsible.””

Daniel looked at the list.

“This was never about stealing from the family.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked toward Ethan.

“It was about destroying every relationship until nobody trusted anyone.””

Ethan looked angry.

“You’re saying someone used me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Ethan looked powerless.

The man who had spent the entire night controlling the room was suddenly realizing he was only another victim.

Daniel folded the paper.

“Who created this list?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“I don’t know.””

Everyone looked disappointed.

Until she added:

“But I know where they are.””

The room froze.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“They’re waiting outside.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

May you like

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“The person who has been watching Lily from the beginning.””
