Chapter 28: The Final Secret My Mother Carried
Nobody moved.
Not because we didn’t believe Lily.
Because we didn’t want to.
My mother.
The woman who had held my hand through every difficult moment.
The woman who had comforted Lily when she cried.
The woman who had spent her entire life telling us family was everything.
Lily was saying she took the missing page.
My mother looked completely broken.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, sweetheart.””
She looked at Lily.
“I didn’t take anything.””
Lily immediately looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
I felt my heart break.
Not because I knew who was telling the truth.
Because I didn’t.
And that was the worst feeling in the world.
Not knowing.
Not trusting.
Not being able to look at someone you loved and feel certain.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Lily, I need you to explain exactly what you saw.””
She nodded.
“I don’t want Grandma to be in trouble.””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
That sentence hurt everyone.
Because even after everything, Lily wasn’t trying to punish anyone.
She was trying to protect everyone.
“What happened?”” Daniel asked gently.
Lily took a breath.
“When Grandpa’s letter was opened…”
She looked toward my mother.
“Grandma was standing behind me.””
My mother nodded.
“I was.””
“Then what?””
“She walked away.””
My mother shook her head.
“I walked away because I was upset.””
Lily nodded.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
“How do you know?””
“Because Grandma was crying.””
My mother covered her mouth.
A tear rolled down her face.
That detail changed something.
Because Lily wasn’t accusing her.
She was describing her.
“She didn’t look like someone hiding something,” Lily whispered.
The room became silent.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did you see her take the page?””
Lily hesitated.
“No.””
Everyone looked confused.
“Then why did you think it was her?””
Lily looked toward the hallway.
“Because someone followed her.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Lily nodded.
“I saw Grandma go toward the office.””
My mother frowned.
“I never went to the office.””
Lily looked at her.
“Not the big office.””
A pause.
“The small room.””
My father’s expression changed.
“The archive room.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What archive room?””
My father swallowed.
“The room where my father kept old family records.””
Daniel immediately turned.
“Where is it?””
My father hesitated.
Then pointed toward the west hallway.
Nobody had checked there.
Of course.
Because everyone had been searching for the obvious places.
Not the hidden ones.
Daniel motioned for security.
We walked down the hallway together.
Nobody spoke.
The entire mansion felt different now.
Every room held another secret.
Every door felt like it could change everything.
When we reached the archive room, my father unlocked the door.
The room was small.
Dust covered the shelves.
Old photographs.
Old documents.
Memories from a family that existed before all of us.
Daniel searched carefully.
Then stopped.
“There.””
Everyone looked.
A small envelope was hidden behind an old picture frame.
My father picked it up.
His hands shook.
“This is my father’s handwriting.””
He opened it.
Inside was another page.
The missing page.
Everyone held their breath.
My father read silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He looked at my mother.
Then at me.
“It’s about the trust.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
My father handed it over.
Daniel read.
Then he looked shocked.
“The trust was never meant to be inherited by one person.””
We already knew that.
But then he continued.
“It was meant to be protected by three people.””
My mother frowned.
“Three?””
Daniel nodded.
“The child.””
“The parent.””
“And the person who understands the family history.””
Everyone looked confused.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at my father.
“Your father chose them.””
My father read the next line.
Then whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at us.
“The three protectors were chosen before Lily was born.””
A pause.
“The child was Lily.””
“The parent was…”
Everyone waited.
My father looked at me.
“You.””
My breath caught.
“And the third person?””
Nobody spoke.
My father looked at the final line.
Then his face went pale.
“The third protector…”
He stopped.
Daniel took the paper.
And read the name.
Everyone froze.
Because the third protector was not my father.
Not my mother.
Not Margaret.
It was someone nobody expected.
Someone who had spent the entire night trying to expose the truth.
Daniel whispered:
“Ethan.””
The room went silent.
Ethan stared.
“What?””
My father looked at him.
“Your father’s plan failed because he never understood why you were chosen.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at the document.
“Your grandfather knew what would happen.””
“He knew your father would return.””
“He knew someone would try to control the family.””
“And he believed the person who could stop it might be the person closest to the danger.””
Everyone looked at Ethan.
The man who came to destroy us.
The man who had manipulated Olivia.
The man who had helped break the family.
Was also part of the protection.
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“That’s impossible.””
My father looked at him.
“Your father hid this from you.””
Ethan went quiet.
Because deep down, he knew.
Michael never trusted him.
He only used him.
Daniel folded the paper.
“But there’s one problem.””
“What?””
“The trust was never activated.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Because the final condition hasn’t happened.””
Everyone became confused.
“What condition?””
Daniel looked at the page.
“It says the protectors must stand together.””
Silence.
My father.
Me.
Ethan.
Three people who had every reason to hate each other.
The people who represented everything that had gone wrong.
And somehow…
We were the only ones who could fix it.
Then a sound came from behind us.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
Michael stood in the doorway.
Smiling.
“You finally figured it out.””
My blood ran cold.
“You knew?””
Michael nodded.
“Of course.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew the entire time?””
“Yes.””
“Then why let everyone suffer?””
Michael smiled.
“Because I wanted to see if the family would choose greed…”
He looked at Lily.
“…or love.””
Nobody understood.
Then he said:
“But you’re too late.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Michael held up a small device.
“The activation key.””
Daniel froze.
“Where did you get that?””
Michael smiled.
“From the one person you never suspected.””
Everyone looked around.
Michael pressed the button.
The lights in the mansion flickered.
And then every screen in the house turned on.
A message appeared.
A message recorded years ago.
From my grandfather.
May you like
And his first words were:
“If you are watching this, it means my family has already fallen apart.””
