Chapter 11: The Person Who Wanted Me Blamed
I couldn’t move.
My eyes stayed fixed on the papers in Daniel’s hands.
My name was there.
My information was there.
Everything looked official.
Everything looked convincing.
That was what terrified me.
Because whoever created this didn’t just want to steal something.
They wanted to destroy someone.
And that someone was me.
“Why me?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
Why would someone frame me?
Daniel studied the documents carefully.
“They needed a believable target.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they chose someone close enough to the family that people would believe the story.””
My chest tightened.
“So they used me because I’m family.””
Daniel nodded.
“And because you have a reputation for protecting everyone.””
Those words hurt.
Because they were true.
I had spent my entire life avoiding conflict.
I was the person who apologized first.
The person who stayed quiet.
The person who fixed problems before anyone else noticed.
And someone had used that against me.
Olivia stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
The apology surprised me.
“For what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For not believing Lily.””
The room became quiet.
She looked at my daughter.
“I should have listened.””
Lily looked uncomfortable.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Not completely.
Some things couldn’t be fixed with two words.
Still, seeing my sister finally understand the damage mattered.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
Everyone waited.
His expression changed.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
Then:
“Send it to me.””
He hung up.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at the security manager.
“The camera footage from the service hallway was recovered.””
Everyone became still.
“But you said the cameras were disabled.””
“They were.””
“Then how?””
Daniel looked at the screen the guard handed him.
“Someone restored them.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
He played the footage.
Nobody could see everything clearly from where we stood.
But we saw enough.
A person walking through the hallway.
Carrying a folder.
Stopping near the office.
Looking around.
Then placing something inside a drawer.
Daniel paused the footage.
“Zoom in.””
The image became clearer.
Everyone stared.
Because the person wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Carter.
It wasn’t Rachel.
It wasn’t Margaret.
It was someone else.
Someone I never expected.
My own father.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“No.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at the footage again.
“It appears to be him.””
My father had been quiet all evening.
Too quiet.
I remembered him sitting at the head table.
Smiling during photographs.
Giving a speech about family.
Everyone had believed he was proud.
But now…
Now I didn’t know what to believe.
“He couldn’t do this,” my mother whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“Why not?””
She looked offended.
“Because he’s my husband.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“And that’s exactly why it hurts.””
I stared at the screen.
My father.
The man who taught me honesty.
The man who told me family was everything.
Could he really be behind this?
Then Lily spoke.
“I saw Grandpa.””
Everyone turned.
“When?””
She looked nervous.
“Earlier.””
My heart sank.
“What did you see?””
“He was arguing with Vanessa.””
Daniel immediately focused.
“What kind of argument?””
Lily looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“Anything you remember.””
She thought.
“Grandpa said…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She whispered:
“You promised this would work.””
The room froze.
My mother sat down.
Because she knew.
She understood.
My father wasn’t just a possibility anymore.
He was connected.
But before anyone could react, the ballroom doors opened.
My father walked in.
Everyone turned.
He looked around.
At the security guards.
At Daniel.
At the documents.
Then at me.
“What is happening?””
Nobody answered.
He looked confused.
Almost genuinely confused.
Then his eyes landed on Lily.
And something changed.
A flash of fear.
Only for a moment.
But I saw it.
My father looked at my daughter like he was afraid of what she knew.
And that broke something inside me.
“Dad,” I said quietly.
“Where were you?””
He stared at me.
“I was outside.””
“Why?””
“I needed air.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at him.
“Why were you on the security footage?””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
The room went silent.
And then my father said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Because I was trying to stop them.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody understood.
“Stop who?”” I asked.
My father looked at Carter.
Then Margaret.
Then the empty doorway where Vanessa had disappeared.
And finally he looked at me.
“The people who planned this.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell us?””
His expression broke.
“Because I was too late.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Lily.
And said:
“Because the person who started this was never trying to steal the property.””
May you like
He paused.
“They were trying to destroy this family.””
