Chapter 17: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Know

My father stared at the floor.

Nobody pushed him.

Nobody needed to.

The entire room was waiting.

Waiting for the truth he had kept buried.

Finally, he looked at me.

“I should have told you years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“Told me what?””

He took a breath.

“About your grandfather’s final decision.””

I frowned.

“What decision?””

Ethan smiled.

Because he knew.

He had been waiting for this moment.

My father continued.

“When your grandfather passed away, he left behind a revised estate plan.””

My mother looked confused.

“I thought everything was finalized.””

“So did I.””

My father looked at Daniel.

“But one part was never revealed.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What part?””

My father looked at me.

“The property wasn’t meant to go to one person.””

Silence.

“It was meant to protect the next generation.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the estate was placed under a family trust.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That explains why someone wanted the documents.””

My father continued.

“The trust had one condition.””

Everyone waited.

“The person managing the trust had to act in the best interest of the children.””

My heart stopped.

“The children?””

My father nodded.

“Your grandfather wanted the family’s future protected.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“And there’s the problem.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What problem?””

Ethan smiled.

“The person chosen to manage it.””

My father looked away.

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan said:

“Your father.””

I looked at my father.

“You?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“You were the trustee?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide this?””

My father looked broken.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He swallowed.

“I changed the arrangement.””

Everyone froze.

My mother stared.

“You changed your father’s trust?””

“I thought I was protecting everyone.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“But you were protecting yourself.””

My father looked at him.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

“You moved control away from the family trust.””

My heart raced.

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That the family would destroy itself fighting over it.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what happened.

“You hid the truth to prevent conflict.””

My father nodded.

“And created a bigger one.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

Secrets didn’t disappear.

They waited.

Then Daniel asked:

“Who knew about this change?””

My father answered quietly:

“Very few people.””

“Who?””

He looked around.

“My lawyer.””

“Your brother.””

“Ethan.””

“Margaret.””

The room went silent.

Again, Margaret.

She lowered her eyes.

“I knew.””

My mother looked at her.

“How?””

Margaret whispered:

“Because Robert asked me to help.””

Everyone turned.

My father looked ashamed.

“I needed someone I trusted.””

“And she kept this secret?””

“Yes.””

Margaret looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting the family.””

My anger returned.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

The room went quiet.

“Protecting the family.””

I looked around.

“But every person who hurt us said they were doing it for the family.””

Nobody had an answer.

Because I was right.

Then Ethan said:

“And that’s why I knew this would work.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Ethan smiled.

“Because this family was already broken.””

The words hurt because part of me feared they were true.

But then Lily stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was small.

But certain.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“Families can make mistakes.””

She looked at Olivia.

“They can hurt people.””

Then at Margaret.

“They can be sorry.””

Then she looked at Ethan.

“But hurting people on purpose is different.””

The room went silent.

Even Ethan looked surprised.

For the first time all night…

Someone had interrupted his control.

A child.

My child.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“She’s right.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You think one child changes anything?””

I stepped forward.

“Yes.””

My voice was calm.

“Because she changed everything tonight.””

Ethan stared at me.

Then smiled.

“Maybe.””

He reached into his coat pocket.

Everyone reacted immediately.

The security guards moved closer.

But Ethan only pulled out an envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“What is that?””

“The final piece.””

Daniel picked it up.

He opened it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“This is a birth certificate.””

I frowned.

“A birth certificate?””

He nodded.

Then looked at my father.

“Whose is it?””

My father didn’t answer.

Ethan smiled.

“Ask him.””

Daniel looked down at the paper.

Then said:

“It belongs to someone in this family.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

“Lily.””
