Chapter 27: The Last Message From Grandpa

Everyone looked at Michael.

Waiting.

Waiting for the final secret.

The final name.

The final piece.

But Michael didn’t answer immediately.

He enjoyed the silence.

That was the kind of person he was.

Someone who believed information was power.

Finally, he spoke.

“Your grandfather left a message.””

My father frowned.

“What message?””

“A message for the person he believed would protect the family.””

Everyone became quiet.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Michael smiled.

“Lily.””

My daughter froze.

Me too.

“No.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart tightened.

“My grandfather died before she was born.””

“Exactly.””

Nobody understood.

Michael continued:

“He knew the adults would fight.””

He looked around.

“And he was right.””

The words hurt.

Because after everything…

They were true.

“He created a final safeguard.””

Daniel looked serious.

“What kind of safeguard?””

“A message that could only be revealed after Lily was old enough.””

My mother looked confused.

“Why Lily?””

Michael answered:

“Because she was the future.””

I held Lily closer.

“No one is putting this responsibility on her.””

Michael smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“She was never supposed to solve anything.””

He looked at Lily.

“She was supposed to reveal it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Explain.””

Michael sighed.

“The trust had a condition.””

Everyone waited.

“The final document would only appear when the family reached a point where trust was broken.””

My stomach dropped.

“When everyone turned against each other.””

Michael nodded.

“Exactly.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that meant the collapse itself was part of the plan.

Not Michael’s plan.

Someone else’s.

My grandfather had predicted it.

Daniel looked at me.

“The document was designed to protect Lily after a family conflict.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Then Lily quietly spoke.

“Maybe it does.””

Everyone looked at her.

She touched her small purse.

“I have something.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She reached inside.

Not another recorder.

Not another document.

A small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

With my grandfather’s handwriting.

Everyone froze.

My father whispered:

“Where did you get that?””

Lily looked at him.

“It was inside my coloring book.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel carefully took it.

“How long have you had this?””

She shrugged.

“I found it last week.””

My heart jumped.

“Last week?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because I thought it was just a letter.””

Daniel opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at my father.

“It’s a confession.””

Everyone froze.

“From your father?””

My father stepped closer.

Daniel handed him the paper.

My father read it.

Then tears filled his eyes.

“What does it say?””

He couldn’t answer.

I had never seen my father cry.

Not once.

Finally, he whispered:

“He knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That someone would try to destroy this family.””

Everyone became silent.

My father continued reading.

“He said the biggest danger wouldn’t come from outsiders.””

A pause.

“He said it would come from people who believed they were entitled to what wasn’t theirs.””

Everyone looked at Michael.

But my father kept reading.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“This message wasn’t only for Lily.””

“Who was it for?””

He looked terrified.

“For you.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

He nodded.

“There’s another page.””

Daniel checked the envelope.

But it was empty.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked inside.

“There should be another page.””

My heart raced.

“Where is it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke softly.

“I think I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Where?””

She pointed toward the entrance.

“Someone took it.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Lily looked afraid.

“Before we came outside…”

She swallowed.

“I saw someone take the second page.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?””

My daughter looked at Michael.

Then slowly shook her head.

“Not him.””

A pause.

“Someone else.””

Everyone waited.

Lily whispered the name.

And this time…

May you like

Nobody was prepared.

“Grandma.””
