Chapter 15: The Enemy Who Never Left
My father’s words changed the entire room.
“The man who tried to destroy this family twenty years ago.””
Nobody understood.
Nobody except him.
And that scared me.
Because my father had always been the person with answers.
The person who protected everyone.
But now he looked like someone facing a nightmare he thought was buried.
“Who is Ethan Walker?”” I asked.
My father didn’t answer immediately.
He walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he just stared outside.
Finally, he spoke.
“Ethan was my business partner.””
Everyone listened.
“Before this family had everything we have now, before the properties, before the company became successful, Ethan and I built everything together.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And something happened.””
My father looked down.
“Yes.””
“What?””
He turned around.
“Ethan believed he deserved more.””
Nobody moved.
“He thought I took credit for his work.””
“Did you?””
My father looked hurt by the question.
“No.””
Then he added:
“But I understand why he felt angry.””
That surprised me.
“You understand?””
“Yes.””
He sighed.
“Because I made mistakes.””
The room became quiet.
My father had always seemed perfect.
But maybe nobody was.
“Ethan wanted control,” he continued.
“When I refused to give him what he wanted, he tried to destroy the company.””
Daniel asked:
“How?””
My father looked at him.
“By manipulating documents.””
Everyone froze.
The same method.
The same pattern.
“He tried to make it look like I committed fraud.””
My stomach tightened.
“The same thing happening now.””
My father nodded.
“Exactly.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
This wasn’t a new plan.
It was a repeat.
A revenge that had been waiting.
“Why did you never tell us?””
My father looked at my mother.
“Because I thought it was over.””
My mother’s voice was quiet.
“You promised me there were no secrets.””
He looked away.
“I was wrong.””
The disappointment on her face was painful.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
Sometimes that hurt more.
Daniel looked at the recorder.
“Ethan trained people.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“This entire operation has his style.””
My father frowned.
“How?””
“Creating conflict between family members.””
Daniel counted on his fingers.
“Using emotions.””
“Using trust.””
“Creating fake evidence.””
“Making everyone blame each other.””
He looked around the room.
“This wasn’t a simple theft.””
He paused.
“It was psychological.””
Nobody spoke.
Because he was right.
Ethan didn’t just want money.
He wanted to watch the family collapse.
Then the doors opened.
A police officer entered with a security guard.
Everyone turned.
“Mr. Hayes?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Yes?””
“We found someone waiting outside.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
The officer looked at the paper in his hand.
“Ethan Walker.””
The room froze.
Nobody expected that.
“He’s here?””
The officer nodded.
“He claims he was invited.””
Everyone looked at each other.
Nobody had invited him.
Daniel walked toward the entrance.
“Where is he?””
The officer stepped aside.
And then we saw him.
A man in his sixties.
Well-dressed.
Calm.
Confident.
The kind of person who looked like he belonged anywhere.
He entered slowly.
And the most terrifying part?
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t nervous.
He was smiling.
“Hello, Robert.””
My father stared at him.
“You.””
Ethan looked around the room.
At the broken wedding.
At the family members who no longer trusted each other.
Then his eyes stopped on Lily.
My entire body reacted.
I moved in front of her.
Ethan smiled.
“So this is the little girl.””
Nobody spoke.
My voice became cold.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
His smile widened.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“She’s exactly as I expected.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked at Lily.
“Smart.””
“Curious.””
“Brave.””
Then he looked at me.
“You should be proud.””
I hated how calm he was.
“How do you know my daughter?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Carter.
Then Margaret.
Then Rachel.
“They were never the important pieces.””
Everyone froze.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan smiled.
“I’m saying you spent the entire night looking for thieves.””
He paused.
“But you never asked the most important question.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“And what question is that?””
Ethan looked directly at him.
“Who gave me access?””
Silence.
My heart started racing.
Because suddenly I understood.
Ethan didn’t come to hide.
He came because he wanted us to know.
He wanted to reveal that the betrayal was deeper than we imagined.
Then he said:
“The person who opened the door for me…”
He looked around the room.
“…is someone you all trust.””
Nobody moved.
And then Ethan’s eyes stopped on one person.
My father.
My blood ran cold.
Because Ethan smiled.
May you like
And said:
“Ask Robert why he invited me back into this family.””
