Chapter 6: The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight
I moved faster than I had ever moved in my life.
“Where is my mother’s purse?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Because everyone knew something was wrong.
We rushed back into the ballroom.
The scene was completely different from the beautiful celebration we had entered hours earlier.
The flowers were still there.
The lights were still glowing.
The decorations were still perfect.
But the happiness was gone.
Guests stood in uncomfortable silence.
Some had already left.
Others watched from a distance, pretending they weren’t watching.
My mother walked directly toward the table where she had left her belongings.
Her purse was gone.
She stopped.
“No.””
Her voice was small.
I had never heard my mother sound afraid before.
“Mom?””
She looked around desperately.
“I left it right here.””
Carter appeared behind us.
“I’m sure someone moved it.””
I turned.
The timing was too perfect.
“You know where it is?””
His eyes shifted.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you answer so quickly?””
He didn’t respond.
Daniel walked past us.
“Security.””
A few seconds later, two security employees approached.
Daniel explained the situation calmly.
“We need access to the event cameras.””
Carter immediately objected.
“Is that necessary?””
Everyone looked at him.
Because it was.
Of course it was.
Daniel stared at him.
“If you have nothing to hide, it shouldn’t be a problem.””
The security team nodded and moved away.
While we waited, I stayed beside Lily.
She looked exhausted.
“You okay?””
She nodded.
But she didn’t look okay.
“You did something very brave tonight.””
She looked at the floor.
“I just wanted you to believe me.””
Those words hurt more than anything else.
Because a child should never have to wonder whether their parent will believe them.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
She looked up.
“Why?””
“Because you were carrying this alone.””
She leaned against me.
And for the first time that night, I felt like my daughter was finally letting herself be a child again.
Then the security manager returned.
“I reviewed the footage.””
Everyone became still.
“And?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Someone did take the purse.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Who?””
The security manager hesitated.
Then he answered.
“It was Rachel.””
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“No.””
But the security manager continued.
“She removed the purse from the table about twenty minutes before the recording was interrupted.””
Daniel looked at Carter.
“And what happened after that?””
The manager looked uncomfortable.
“She met someone near the service hallway.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
The security manager looked at the floor.
“Carter.””
Everything stopped.
Even Carter had no words.
Olivia turned toward him slowly.
“You knew.””
Carter immediately shook his head.
“No.””
But nobody believed him anymore.
Not even her.
My sister stepped back.
“How could you?””
Carter’s expression changed.
The guilt was finally visible.
Not because he regretted hurting people.
Because he had been caught.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone watched his expression change.
“What?””
A pause.
Then he looked at us.
“I need everyone to stay calm.””
Nobody stayed calm after hearing those words.
“What happened?””
Daniel lowered the phone.
“The document is missing.””
My mother looked confused.
“What document?””
Daniel looked at her.
“The original property agreement.””
My heart sank.
“But if it’s gone…”
He nodded.
“It means someone may already have what they came for.””
The room went silent.
Then Daniel added:
“And there’s something else.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
He looked directly at Carter.
“The person who removed the document didn’t act alone.””
Carter’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel held up the phone.
“I received a message from someone claiming they know who gave Carter access.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Olivia.
Then at me.
And finally said:
“The person who sent the message says the mastermind is not Rachel.””
A silence followed.
A terrible silence.
Because if Rachel wasn’t the person behind everything…
Then the betrayal was much closer than we thought.
Daniel looked around the room.
May you like
“The person responsible is someone standing here tonight.””
And suddenly, every family member became a suspect.
