Chapter 10: The Person Who Controlled the Entire Night
The wedding planner was gone.
That was the first thing everyone noticed.
Not missing.
Not delayed.
Gone.
The realization moved through the ballroom like a wave.
A few minutes earlier, everyone had been focused on Carter, Rachel, and Margaret.
We had believed the betrayal had already been uncovered.
We thought we had found the people responsible.
But we had been wrong.
Someone else had been moving quietly in the background.
Someone who had access to everything.
The decorations.
The schedule.
The guest list.
The cameras.
The private rooms.
The exact moment when everyone’s attention would be somewhere else.
My mother looked at Daniel.
“Who is this person?””
Daniel checked the paper again.
“The wedding coordinator.””
Olivia’s face changed.
“Vanessa?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew who he meant.
Vanessa had been the person Olivia hired months ago.
She was the one who organized every detail of the wedding.
The flowers.
The seating arrangements.
The timing of the speeches.
The lighting.
The music.
She had been everywhere tonight.
And now she was nowhere.
I looked around the ballroom.
“How could she be involved?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because people who control the details are often the ones nobody notices.””
Those words stayed with me.
Because it was true.
Vanessa had never stood in the spotlight.
She didn’t need to.
She moved behind it.
I remembered seeing her earlier that evening.
Always calm.
Always smiling.
Always appearing helpful.
When Lily spilled juice on her dress before the ceremony, Vanessa had been the one who comforted her.
When my mother couldn’t find her reading glasses, Vanessa had searched for them.
When Olivia started panicking about the schedule, Vanessa had whispered that everything was under control.
Everything was under control.
The words suddenly felt different.
“Find her,” Daniel told security.
The guards immediately moved.
Carter laughed quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
“What’s funny?”” Olivia asked.
He looked around.
“You really think Vanessa did all of this?””
Daniel stared at him.
“You seem surprised.””
“I’m surprised you’re looking in the wrong direction.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Carter smiled slightly.
It wasn’t a confident smile.
It was a desperate one.
“It means you still don’t understand what happened tonight.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then explain.””
Carter looked around.
At all the people who hated him now.
At Olivia.
At my mother.
At me.
Then he said something nobody expected.
“I wasn’t the only person trying to get that property.””
Silence.
Olivia stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Carter looked at Margaret.
“She knows.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
But it was too late.
Everyone turned toward her.
“What does he mean?”” my mother asked.
Margaret looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””
His voice became colder.
“This was planning.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“There was someone else.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me more.
Because even after everything, she was still protecting someone.
Daniel noticed too.
“You’re afraid.””
Margaret looked at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He pointed toward the empty ballroom.
“You’re not afraid of being exposed.””
He paused.
“You’re afraid of what happens when we find out who was above you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily quietly said:
“Mom?””
I looked down.
“What is it?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Vanessa was there.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Lily nodded.
“Before I went to the DJ booth.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you see?””
“She was talking to Carter.””
Carter immediately said:
“That’s impossible.””
Lily looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was small.
But certain.
“She told you everything was ready.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at Carter.
“What was ready?””
Carter didn’t answer.
And once again, his silence exposed him.
The security manager returned.
“Mr. Hayes.””
Daniel turned.
“We found Vanessa’s office bag.””
Everyone froze.
“Where?””
“In the staff area.””
“Is she there?””
The guard shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel opened the bag.
Inside were several items.
A planner.
Keys.
A folder.
And a small envelope.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at my mother.
“This is a copy of your estate information.””
My mother’s face went pale.
“How?””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Someone gave it to her.””
Everyone looked around.
Because that meant something terrifying.
The information didn’t come from Vanessa.
It came from inside the family.
Daniel turned the folder around.
“There’s a name.””
My heart raced.
“Whose?””
He looked down.
Then slowly said:
“Your name.””
I froze.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
I grabbed the papers.
But before I could understand what I was seeing, Daniel stopped me.
“Careful.””
“Why?””
“Because this is not a document proving you did something.””
He looked serious.
“It’s a document designed to make it look like you did.””
The room went quiet.
Someone had copied my information.
Someone had created fake evidence.
Someone wanted me blamed.
And suddenly, the question changed.
It wasn’t just:
Who stole the property?
May you like
It became:
Who wanted me to take the fall?
