Chapter 20: The Promise My Parents Broke

My mother looked at my father like she no longer recognized him.

“You’re blaming me?””

Her voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

My father looked devastated.

“I’m not blaming you.””

“Then why did you say my name?””

“Because you signed the agreement.””

The words hit harder than any accusation that night.

My mother stepped back.

“I don’t remember signing anything.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the exact same thing she had said about the property documents.

And now everyone was wondering.

Was she telling the truth?

Or was she hiding something?

Daniel looked between them.

“We need the full story.””

My father nodded slowly.

“I should have told everyone earlier.””

He looked exhausted.

“When the trust was created, there was a legal condition.””

“What condition?”” Daniel asked.

“That both parents had to acknowledge the protection clause.””

My father looked at my mother.

“We both signed.””

My mother shook her head.

“I signed many documents over the years.””

“That one was different.””

“Why?””

My father hesitated.

“Because it changed who controlled the future of the family.””

My mother stared at him.

“And you never told me?””

“I thought you knew.””

The pain on her face was impossible to miss.

“I was your wife.””

Her voice cracked.

“You thought I wouldn’t remember something that important?””

My father looked away.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

Ethan watched them.

Enjoying every second.

“You see?””

He said quietly.

“This is what I knew would happen.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Ethan smiled.

“You all built your family on secrets.””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone knew there was truth in that.

Even if Ethan was the enemy…

He had found the cracks.

And he had pushed until everything broke.

My mother wiped her eyes.

“So what did I sign?””

My father answered:

“An agreement protecting Lily’s inheritance.””

My mother looked confused.

“Then why would Ethan need it?””

Daniel answered.

“Because control of the trust could determine who benefits from the property.””

My father nodded.

“Ethan wanted that control.””

My mother looked at Ethan.

“You manipulated my daughter.””

Ethan smiled.

“Your daughter made her own choices.””

My anger rose.

“Don’t pretend this was innocent.””

He looked at me.

“I never forced Lily to do anything.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“But you created a situation where a child had to fix what adults destroyed.””

That made him quiet.

Because he knew.

That was the truth.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“You still haven’t explained how you got access.””

Ethan smiled.

“I didn’t.””

Everyone frowned.

“What?””

“I never had direct access.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Then who helped you?””

Ethan looked around.

And this time…

He didn’t look at my father.

He didn’t look at my mother.

He looked at Carter.

Everyone turned.

Carter immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Ethan smiled.

“You were useful.””

Carter’s face hardened.

“I helped you because you promised me money.””

The room exploded.

Olivia looked like she had been hit.

“You knew?””

She stared at Carter.

“You knew all of this?””

Carter looked away.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Enough.””

Her voice broke.

“You knew enough.””

Carter didn’t respond.

And that was the answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“So Carter was the connection.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you say the mastermind was someone else?””

Ethan smiled.

“Because Carter was never smart enough to lead anything.””

Carter’s face turned red.

“You used me.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Everyone uses everyone.””

That sentence revealed everything about him.

To Ethan, people weren’t family.

They were pieces.

Tools.

Moves.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching Ethan carefully.

And then she said something that surprised everyone.

“He doesn’t know everything.””

The room went silent.

I looked down.

“What?””

Lily looked at Ethan.

“You said you planned everything.””

Ethan stared.

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t know I had another recording.””

Everyone froze.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Lily reached into her purse.

Again.

Another device.

My father stared.

“Lily…”

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know if the first one was enough.””

Daniel immediately took it.

“Where did you get this?””

She answered:

“From the same place.””

“Where?””

She looked toward Ethan.

“From someone who wanted me to find it.””

Everyone froze.

Ethan’s expression changed.

For the first time…

Real fear appeared.

“What did you say?””

Lily looked confused.

“Someone left it where I would see it.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“You didn’t plant this.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Someone else had been playing the game.

Daniel pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

Not Carter.

Not Ethan.

Not Margaret.

A new voice.

A woman’s voice.

And after three seconds…

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone knew that voice.

It belonged to someone standing in the room.

Someone we thought was a victim.

Someone we thought had been betrayed.

My mother whispered:

“No…”

The recording continued.

May you like

And the voice said:

“Everything is going exactly as planned.””
