Chapter 16: The Secret My Father Kept From Us
The entire room turned toward my father.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
The accusation was already hanging in the air.
My father stood frozen near the doorway, staring at Ethan like he had just seen a ghost from his past walk back into his life.
“You invited him?”” my mother whispered.
My father looked at her.
The pain in his expression told me everything.
Not guilt.
Not exactly.
Fear.
“Robert,” Ethan said calmly, “you always were terrible at telling the truth when it mattered.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t do this.””
A small smile appeared on Ethan’s face.
“Do what?””
“Pretend you’re the victim.””
The room became colder.
Because that was the first time I saw my father lose control.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Ethan laughed quietly.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Both men looked at him.
“This isn’t a reunion.””
Daniel’s voice was firm.
“This is an investigation.””
Ethan smiled.
“Good.””
He looked around.
“Because after tonight, everyone deserves the truth.””
I hated how comfortable he was.
Everyone else was falling apart.
But Ethan stood there like he had planned every second.
Because maybe he had.
Daniel looked at my father.
“Did you contact Ethan Walker?””
My father didn’t answer.
That silence hurt.
“Dad?””
I needed him to say no.
I needed him to look me in the eyes and tell me this man was lying.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he whispered:
“Yes.””
The room exploded.
My mother stepped back.
“You did?””
My father closed his eyes.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
I stared at him.
“Then why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I thought I could fix something I broke years ago.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What did you break?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Our partnership.””
My father looked at him.
“You betrayed me.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
For the first time, the calm mask slipped.
“You always tell that story.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You tell that story because it makes you the hero.””
My father clenched his fists.
“You tried to steal my company.””
Ethan smiled.
“And you stole my future.””
The room went silent.
Nobody knew who to believe.
And that was the problem.
Two men.
Two versions of the past.
Two people who claimed they had been wronged.
Daniel looked between them.
“Start from the beginning.””
My father hesitated.
Then he sat down.
A man who had always looked powerful suddenly looked exhausted.
“Twenty years ago, Ethan and I built a company together.””
He looked at my mother.
“I trusted him.””
Ethan laughed softly.
“You trusted me until you became more successful.””
My father ignored him.
“Then one day, I discovered money was missing.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“I told you that was a misunderstanding.””
“You transferred funds without permission.””
“Because I was protecting the company.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
The argument became sharper.
Years of anger coming out in front of everyone.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching carefully.
Too carefully.
I knelt beside her.
“You don’t have to listen.””
She shook her head.
“I want to understand.””
That sentence broke my heart.
Because she was eight years old, standing in the middle of adult secrets and betrayal, trying to make sense of a world that kept proving people could lie.
Daniel continued questioning.
“What happened after the business dispute?””
My father looked down.
“I removed Ethan from the company.””
Ethan nodded.
“And destroyed my reputation.””
“You destroyed your own reputation.””
Ethan smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The arrogance.””
My father looked at him.
Ethan turned to everyone.
“Robert doesn’t understand something.””
He pointed toward my father.
“He thinks winning means proving he was right.””
Then he looked at me.
“But revenge isn’t about being right.””
A chill moved through me.
“It’s about making someone feel what you felt.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was Ethan’s entire plan.
Not money.
Not property.
Pain.
Daniel stepped closer.
“If you wanted revenge, why involve this family?””
Ethan looked around.
“Because family is where people hurt the most.””
My hands curled into fists.
I wanted him gone.
I wanted him nowhere near Lily.
Then Ethan looked directly at my daughter.
“But I didn’t expect her.””
Everyone froze.
Lily looked confused.
“What?””
Ethan smiled.
“You.””
I immediately moved closer.
“Don’t talk to her.””
He ignored me.
“You changed everything.””
Daniel watched him carefully.
“How?””
Ethan answered:
“Because my plan depended on everyone acting exactly how I expected.””
He looked at Carter.
“And he did.””
At Margaret.
“And she did.””
At Rachel.
“And she did.””
Then he looked at Lily.
“But you didn’t.””
My daughter lowered her eyes.
Ethan continued:
“You noticed things.””
“You listened.””
“You remembered.””
His voice became quieter.
“And you ruined months of planning in one night.””
I hated hearing him talk about her like she was a piece on a chessboard.
“She’s a child.””
Ethan looked at me.
“That’s why nobody suspected her.””
The room went silent.
Then Daniel asked:
“What was the final step?””
Ethan smiled.
“The final step already happened.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He looked toward the ballroom.
“Everyone saw the family collapse.””
He paused.
“Everyone blamed each other.””
Then he said:
“That was the goal.””
Daniel frowned.
“But why?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at my father.
“Tell them.””
My father looked terrified.
And that scared me more than Ethan’s words.

Because whatever came next…
My father had been hiding it.
