Chapter 8: The Photograph That Exposed A Hidden Family Secret

Elena stared at the photograph.

The room blurred around her.

Alexander noticed her expression.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Because the person standing beside Alexander in the photograph was impossible.

A woman.

A woman Elena knew.

A woman who had been part of her life for years.

Alexander looked at the picture.

Then froze.

“Where did you get this?””

Elena looked at him.

“You know her.””

He didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Everyone noticed.

Mrs. Howard stood.

“Alexander?””

He looked away.

“I can explain.””

Elena felt something inside her break.

“Explain what?””

Alexander swallowed.

The confidence he usually carried was gone.

“She was my sister.””

Silence.

Elena stared.

“Your sister?””

Alexander nodded.

“My half-sister.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone had believed Alexander was an only child.

“My father hid her,” Alexander said quietly.

Richard immediately interrupted.

“Enough.””

But Alexander ignored him.

“She was born before my parents married.””

Elena looked at Richard.

“And she knew about everything?””

Richard’s silence answered.

Detective Ruiz looked at the photograph.

“Who is she?””

Alexander hesitated.

Then said the name.

“Claire.””

Elena’s heart stopped.

Because Claire Howard was not a stranger.

She was the woman who had comforted Elena after her wedding.

The woman who always defended Richard.

The woman who told Elena to be patient with the family.

The woman who disappeared three months ago.

“She was helping him,” Elena whispered.

Alexander looked ashamed.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

His expression broke.

“She never told me the truth.””

Elena looked at the photograph again.

The handwriting on the back was from her mother.

The message was short.

*She knows what happened to me.*

A chill moved through Elena.

“Where is Claire now?””

Nobody answered.

Then Detective Ruiz’s phone rang.

He answered quickly.

“Yes?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

After a few seconds, he lowered the phone.

“We found Claire.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Where?””

Ruiz looked toward Elena.

“In the old Howard estate.””

Richard suddenly moved.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Elena noticed.

“You know what’s there.””

Richard said nothing.

Detective Ruiz immediately noticed.

“What is hidden at the old estate?””

Richard looked at him.

“Nothing.””

But nobody believed him.

The old Howard estate had been abandoned for years.

A place nobody visited.

A place Alexander thought had been sold.

But now Claire was there.

And Richard was afraid.

Elena looked at her mother.

“Why didn’t you tell me about her?””

Her mother looked sad.

“Because I didn’t know if she was helping you or watching you.””

Elena closed her eyes.

Too many secrets.

Too many years stolen.

She turned toward Alexander.

“How much of your family history do you not know?””

The question hurt him.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

“I thought I knew.””

Elena shook her head.

“That’s what everyone wanted you to believe.””

Then Detective Ruiz received another message.

He read it carefully.

“What?””

Alexander looked at him.

“What happened?””

Ruiz looked up.

“The old estate was searched.””

“And?””

His face became serious.

“They found a room.””

Elena felt a strange sense of dread.

“What kind of room?””

Ruiz looked at Richard.

“One that was never supposed to be discovered.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Inside that room, they found old documents.

Photographs.

Recordings.

And one final piece of evidence.

Evidence that connected Richard Howard to something much darker.

But before Ruiz could explain, the mansion doors suddenly opened.

A woman stood outside.

Her face was pale.

Her clothes were torn.

And she was crying.

Alexander whispered:

“Claire?””

Claire looked directly at Elena.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother wasn’t the only person Richard tried to erase.””
