Chapter 12: The Woman With Nothing Left To Lose

The mansion went into lockdown.

Every door was checked.

Every window was secured.

But Elena knew something important.

People like Vanessa didn’t need doors.

They found weaknesses.

They created them.

Alexander stood beside Elena in the living room.

“I should have protected you.””

She looked at him.

“You were trapped too.””

“That doesn’t excuse it.””

“No.””

Elena paused.

“But it explains it.””

Alexander looked surprised.

After everything, she still saw the difference between a mistake and cruelty.

That was what separated him from his family.

He still felt guilt.

Richard never did.

Detective Ruiz spoke with officers near the entrance.

“We found evidence Vanessa planned the escape before the arrest.””

Claire nodded.

“She always had backup plans.””

Elena looked outside.

The garden was dark.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

“She’s not coming here to escape.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She’s coming here because she thinks there’s something left.””

Ruiz nodded.

“She knows about the evidence.””

“And she knows Richard will abandon her.””

Elena looked at Richard.

He sat silently.

For the first time, the powerful Richard Howard looked small.

Then Elena heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

Ruiz immediately moved.

“Stay here.””

But Elena knew.

Vanessa wanted her to follow.

She always wanted control.

Slowly, Elena walked toward the staircase.

Alexander followed.

“Elena, don’t.””

She looked at him.

“If she wanted to hurt me, she would have done it already.””

They reached the upper hallway.

The lights flickered.

Then a voice spoke.

“You always were brave.””

Vanessa stepped out from the shadows.

She looked different.

No makeup.

No perfect clothes.

No fake tears.

Just anger.

“Elena.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You still protect her?””

Alexander’s face hardened.

“Yes.””

That answer hurt Vanessa more than anything.

“You chose her.””

“No,” Alexander said.

“I chose the truth.””

Vanessa looked at Elena.

“You ruined everything.””

Elena stared.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You did.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“You think this is about money?””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“It was never about money.””

Everyone became silent.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I wanted to be chosen.””

Elena watched her carefully.

For the first time, she saw something beneath the hatred.

A person who had spent years believing she was unwanted.

But pain did not excuse what she had done.

Vanessa continued.

“Richard promised me a place in this family.””

“And he lied.””

“Yes.””

She laughed.

“He lied to everyone.””

Then she looked at Elena.

“But you were the one thing he couldn’t control.””

Elena frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“Because he didn’t know about the final document.””

Richard’s voice came from behind them.

“What document?””

Vanessa smiled.

The same dangerous smile she had worn before.

“The one proving who really owns Howard International.””

Everyone froze.

Detective Ruiz stepped forward.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa looked at Elena.

“I’ll show you.””

Elena didn’t move.

“Why would I trust you?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because if I don’t reveal it…”

She looked toward Richard.

“He wins.””

The hallway became silent.

Then Vanessa reached into her coat.

She pulled out an old envelope.

And written across the front were four words:

*For Elena Howard only.*

Elena stared at it.

Because she knew that handwriting.

It was her father’s.

A father she barely remembered.

A father who died when she was a child.

And inside that envelope was the truth that would finally reveal why Elena had always been connected to the Howard family.

Not by marriage.

May you like

Not by Alexander.

But by something much older.
