Chapter 7: The Mother Who Carried The Truth

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Elena stared at the woman standing in the doorway.

Older.

Weaker.

But unmistakable.

The same eyes.

The same gentle expression Elena remembered from childhood.

“Mom…”

The word escaped her lips before she could stop it.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Elena.””

That was all it took.

Elena ran.

She crossed the room faster than anyone expected and wrapped her arms around the woman.

For twelve years, she had imagined this moment.

She had imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But the only thing she felt was relief.

Her mother was alive.

Her mother was really alive.

“I thought I lost you,” Elena whispered.

Her mother held her tightly.

“I thought I would never see you again.””

Behind them, nobody spoke.

Because everyone was trying to understand the impossible.

Alexander looked at Detective Ruiz.

“Is this real?””

Ruiz nodded slowly.

“We confirmed her identity before bringing her here.””

Mrs. Howard sat down heavily.

“I don’t understand.””

Elena’s mother looked toward Richard.

And the room changed.

Because fear appeared on her face.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Richard noticed.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

The words were quiet.

But everyone heard them.

Alexander turned sharply.

“You knew?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Elena stepped between them.

“You knew my mother was alive.””

Richard looked at her.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I’m finally going to.””

Her mother wiped her tears.

“Elena, there are things you need to know.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

Detective Ruiz moved forward.

“Actually, it isn’t.””

He looked at Elena’s mother.

“You’re safe now. Tell them everything.””

She took a deep breath.

Then she looked around the mansion.

“The Howard family was never what it appeared to be.””

Alexander looked hurt.

“My family?””

Her mother nodded sadly.

“Years ago, I worked for this family. I discovered financial crimes hidden inside Howard International.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“And you thought exposing me would save everyone?””

“You were hurting people,” she replied.

The room went silent.

Elena listened carefully.

Because suddenly the past she had spent years trying to understand was becoming clear.

Her mother continued.

“I found documents proving Richard was moving money illegally. I was going to report him.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You were young and naive.””

“No,” she said.

“I was brave.””

For the first time, Richard looked angry.

Elena noticed.

He was no longer the powerful businessman.

He was a man losing control.

“What happened that night?”” Elena asked.

Her mother looked at her.

“I tried to leave with the evidence.””

“And?””

“I was stopped.””

Everyone waited.

Her mother lowered her eyes.

“Richard threatened me.””

Alexander looked at his father.

“No.””

“He told me if I went to the police, Elena would suffer.””

Elena felt cold.

“You used me?””

Richard looked away.

“I protected this family.””

“No,” Elena said.

“You protected yourself.””

Her mother continued.

“I knew I couldn’t fight him alone. So I disappeared.””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“You left me.””

Her mother looked devastated.

“I left to save you.””

The pain in those words was worse than any explanation.

“I watched you from a distance,” her mother whispered.

“I saw you grow up. I saw you marry Alexander.””

Elena shook her head.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Her mother looked toward Richard.

“Because he made sure I couldn’t.””

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Detective Ruiz raised his hand.

“Don’t.””

Richard stopped.

Ruiz continued.

“We have enough evidence to investigate the old case.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Old case.

Those words frightened him.

Because Elena realized something.

The attack.

The conspiracy.

The fraud.

They were all connected.

Vanessa was only one piece.

Richard was the center.

Then Elena’s mother said something nobody expected.

“There was someone else helping Richard.””

Alexander frowned.

“Who?””

Her mother looked at Elena.

And Elena immediately knew.

She didn’t want to hear the answer.

“Someone inside this house.””

Everyone looked around.

The mansion suddenly felt smaller.

More dangerous.

Richard smiled faintly.

“You see?””

He looked at Elena.

“You still don’t know the whole truth.””

Before Elena could respond, her mother reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I saved this for twelve years.””

Elena took it.

“What is it?””

Her mother looked at Alexander.

“It’s the reason Richard wanted you away from this family.””

Elena opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

And behind it, a handwritten note.

Her hands trembled.

Because the photograph showed Alexander.

But he was much younger.

May you like

Standing beside someone Elena never expected to see.

Someone who changed everything.
