Chapter 11: The Last Piece Of The Puzzle
The private archive was located beneath the mansion.
A place almost nobody knew existed.
Alexander remembered seeing the door once as a child.
His father told him it was only an old storage room.
Another lie.
Detective Ruiz led the way downstairs.
The air became colder with every step.
Elena walked beside her mother.
Neither spoke.
There were too many years to explain.
Too many moments stolen.
Finally, her mother whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Elena looked at her.
“For leaving?””
Her mother nodded.
Elena took a long breath.
“I spent years thinking you didn’t want me.””
Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted you more than anything.””
The words stayed with Elena.
Because maybe healing didn’t happen all at once.
Maybe it started with finally hearing the truth.
Behind them, Alexander followed quietly.
He looked different.
Broken.
But honest.
When they reached the archive, the door was open.
Ruiz immediately raised his hand.
“Everyone stay back.””
Inside, papers covered the floor.
Drawers had been emptied.
Someone had searched the room.
But they had missed something.
A small metal box hidden behind an old shelf.
Claire pointed.
“That wasn’t there before.””
Ruiz picked it up.
Inside was a USB drive.
And a handwritten note.
Elena recognized the handwriting immediately.
Richard.
“What does it say?”” Alexander asked.
Ruiz read it.
“If you are seeing this, then I failed.””
Everyone went silent.
Richard, standing behind them, looked suddenly afraid.
Ruiz continued.
“The truth about the Howard family is contained here.””
Alexander looked at his father.
“You left this?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Elena.
“He was hiding it from everyone.””
Ruiz connected the drive to his laptop.
A video appeared.
Richard’s face filled the screen.
But this Richard looked different.
Older.
Exhausted.
Not the confident man from the mansion.
The recording began.
“If anyone finds this, understand one thing.””
He paused.
“I did not create this empire alone.””
Everyone listened.
Richard continued.
“There was someone before me.””
Elena frowned.
“Someone before him?””
The video continued.
“A person who taught me how to manipulate people.””
Alexander looked confused.
“Who?””
Then Richard said a name.
A name that made Mrs. Howard gasp.
“My father.””
The room froze.
The secrets went deeper than anyone imagined.
Richard’s recorded voice continued.
“The Howard family survived because we learned one rule.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“Control the story.””
Elena felt sick.
Because that was exactly what Vanessa had done.
What Richard had done.
What generations before them had done.
The video continued.
“But one person refused to play along.””
A photograph appeared.
A woman.
Elena’s mother.
“She discovered everything.””
Her mother closed her eyes.
Richard’s recorded voice continued.
“I thought removing her would end the problem.””
Elena whispered.
“But it didn’t.””
“No,” her mother said.
“Because I kept the evidence.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You knew about this?””
She nodded.
“I knew one day the truth would need protection.””
Elena looked at the USB.
“So why come back now?””
Her mother looked toward Richard.
“Because I realized he was going after you.””
Silence.
The recording continued.
“And if Elena ever finds this…”
Richard’s recorded face changed.
For the first time, regret appeared.
“She deserves to know Alexander was never the enemy.””
Alexander looked shocked.
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Richard suddenly grabbed the laptop.
He threw it against the wall.
The screen shattered.
Detective Ruiz immediately stepped forward.
“Richard Howard, stop.””
Richard breathed heavily.
“You don’t understand.””
Elena looked at him.
“Understand what?””
His eyes moved toward her.
“That if the truth comes out, everything collapses.””
Elena stared.
“Good.””
Richard looked surprised.
She continued.
“Some things deserve to fall.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Alexander looked at her.
“What happened?””
Claire slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s Vanessa.””
Elena frowned.
“She’s in custody.””
Claire looked terrified.
“She escaped.””
Everyone froze.
Then Claire said the words that made Elena’s blood run cold.
May you like
“And she’s not running away.””
“She’s coming here.””
