Chapter 4: The Man Behind Vanessa’s Shadow
The voice from the doorway froze the entire mansion.
Elena knew that voice.
She had heard it before.
Not many times.
But enough.
Enough to remember the calm confidence behind every word.
A man stepped into the room wearing a dark gray suit, his expression unreadable.
Alexander’s face immediately changed.
“Father?””
The room fell silent.
Richard Howard walked slowly toward them, carrying a leather briefcase in one hand.
For years, he had been the man who controlled the Howard empire from behind closed doors.
The man who rarely appeared.
The man everyone respected.
And feared.
Mrs. Howard stared at him.
“Richard… what are you doing here?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then at Elena.
“I came because this family has been built on lies.””
Vanessa suddenly looked relieved.
“Richard, thank God.””
She moved toward him.
But he stepped away.
That small movement shocked everyone.
Vanessa stopped.
“You…”
Richard looked at Detective Ruiz.
“Show them.””
Ruiz opened another file.
“Richard Howard has been under investigation for several months.””
Alexander looked stunned.
“What?””
Richard didn’t react.
Instead, he looked directly at Elena.
“You were always smarter than they gave you credit for.””
Elena narrowed her eyes.
“Is that supposed to be a compliment?””
“No.””
Richard’s answer was cold.
“It’s an observation.””
Vanessa looked between them.
“Wait. You’re saying Richard knew?””
Elena said nothing.
Because she remembered the first time she realized someone more powerful than Vanessa was involved.
Three months earlier, Elena had found a hidden account connected to a private investment company.
The account had transferred money to Vanessa.
At first, she assumed Vanessa was working alone.
Then she found something strange.
Every payment had one approval signature.
Richard Howard.
She confronted him quietly.
Not with anger.
With proof.
She had entered his office late one night after noticing the documents left on his desk.
Richard had been standing behind her when she turned around.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he had said.
Elena remembered the coldness in his eyes.
“I could say the same thing about you.””
Richard looked at the documents in her hand.
“You’ve been investigating.””
“Yes.””
“Do you know what happens to people who dig into things they don’t understand?””
Elena held his gaze.
“They find the truth.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“You sound like your mother.””
That sentence had stayed with Elena.
Because Richard knew something about her mother.
Something he had never told anyone.
Now, standing in the mansion, Elena finally understood.
This had never only been about Vanessa.
Vanessa was just the person everyone could see.
Richard was the person hiding behind the curtain.
Detective Ruiz placed photographs on the table.
“These documents show communication between Richard and Vanessa.””
Alexander picked them up.
His hands shook.
“Dad…”
Richard looked at his son.
“I did what I had to do.””
“For what?””
Richard’s eyes moved toward Elena.
“For the company.””
Elena laughed quietly.
“The company.””
She repeated the words.
“That’s what you tell yourself?””
Richard frowned.
“You don’t understand what’s at stake.””
“No,” Elena replied.
“I understand perfectly.””
She walked closer.
“You were afraid Alexander would change everything.””
Richard remained silent.
Elena continued.
“You knew if Alexander had control of the company, he would stop the illegal projects you were protecting.””
Alexander looked at his father.
“What is she talking about?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Don’t listen to her.””
But Detective Ruiz interrupted.
“She’s correct.””
He placed another folder down.
“These files show financial misconduct connected to Howard International.””
Alexander stared at the documents.
His father’s empire.
The company he had spent his entire life believing was honorable.
Destroyed by the person who built it.
Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.
“You lied to me.””
Everyone looked at her.
Richard gave her a cold glance.
“You knew what you were doing.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You told me Elena was the only obstacle.””
Richard said nothing.
And that silence was her answer.
Vanessa’s face changed.
The realization finally reached her.
She had never been Richard’s partner.
She had been his tool.
Elena watched her carefully.
Because there was one thing Vanessa didn’t know.
The worst part of the evidence had not been revealed yet.
The documents proving Vanessa pushed Elena were only the beginning.
The real secret was hidden in the final recording.
A recording Elena had saved for the right moment.
And that moment had arrived.
Detective Ruiz reached into his pocket.
“I think everyone should hear what happened the night before the accident.””
Vanessa looked alarmed.
“What recording?””
Elena smiled faintly.
“The one you made yourself.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
Because she suddenly remembered.
The conversation.
The room.
May you like
The person she had spoken to.
And the words she thought nobody would ever hear.
