Chapter 14: The Truth Everyone Protected

The mansion had never been quiet.

Not really.

Even when nobody spoke, secrets filled every room.

But now, for the first time, Elena felt like the walls themselves were finally surrendering.

She stared at Mrs. Howard.

The woman who had welcomed her.

The woman who had defended her sometimes.

The woman who had also remained silent.

“You knew.””

Mrs. Howard looked down.

“I knew part of it.””

Elena felt her chest tighten.

“Part?””

Mrs. Howard wiped her eyes.

“I knew Richard was hiding something.””

Richard looked at her.

“You promised.””

Mrs. Howard looked at him with disgust.

“I promised to protect my family.””

“And you failed.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Grandmother, what did you know?””

She looked at him.

“I knew your father was becoming dangerous.””

Richard laughed.

“Dangerous?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You stopped caring who you destroyed.””

Nobody spoke.

Mrs. Howard continued.

“When Elena’s father discovered the company’s corruption, he came to me.””

Elena looked surprised.

“You met my father?””

“Yes.””

Her expression softened.

“He begged me to protect you.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I promised him I would.””

Elena swallowed.

“But you didn’t.””

Mrs. Howard closed her eyes.

“No.””

The honesty was painful.

“Because Richard threatened Alexander.””

Everyone turned.

Alexander froze.

“Me?””

“He was young,” Mrs. Howard said.

“He had just started working at the company. Richard told me if I exposed him, Alexander would lose everything.””

Alexander looked at his father.

“You used me.””

Richard didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

The answer was always silence.

Elena looked at Richard.

“You destroyed everyone around you.””

Richard finally snapped.

“Do you think I had a choice?””

His voice echoed through the mansion.

“I built something!””

“No,” Elena replied.

“You stole something.””

The words hit him.

For the first time, Richard looked defeated.

Detective Ruiz stepped forward.

“Richard Howard, you are under arrest pending investigation into fraud, conspiracy, and attempted obstruction.””

Richard looked at Elena.

“You think this is the end?””

Elena didn’t respond.

Because she knew people like Richard always believed they had one final move.

And she was right.

As officers approached him, Richard smiled.

“You still don’t know the entire story.””

Alexander frowned.

“What else?””

Richard looked at Elena.

“Ask your mother why she really disappeared.””

Elena turned.

Her mother looked away.

The room changed.

Again.

“Mom?””

Her mother slowly sat down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She looked at Elena.

“The night I disappeared…”

Her voice shook.

“I wasn’t running from Richard.””

Elena felt her heart stop.

“Then what happened?””

Her mother took a deep breath.

“I was protecting you from someone else.””

Everyone became silent.

“Who?””

Her mother looked toward the doorway.

Nobody was there.

But the fear in her eyes was real.

“Your father.””

Elena stepped back.

“What?””

Her mother immediately shook her head.

“Not because he wanted to hurt you.””

She looked devastated.

“Because he discovered something about your birth.””

Alexander stared.

“Your birth?””

Elena’s hands trembled.

“What does that mean?””

Her mother reached into her bag.

She pulled out another envelope.

Smaller.

Older.

“This was supposed to stay hidden forever.””

Elena opened it slowly.

Inside was a birth certificate.

But not hers.

Another one.

A child’s name.

A name she had never heard.

Then she saw the date.

The same day she was born.

Detective Ruiz looked over her shoulder.

His face changed.

“Elena…”

She looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed at the document.

“This means…”

He stopped.

Unable to finish.

Elena looked back at the paper.

Then at her mother.

“Who is this child?””

Her mother whispered:

“Your twin sister.””

Nobody moved.

The impossible truth stood in front of them.

Elena had spent her entire life believing she was alone.

But she wasn’t.

And somewhere in the world…

Someone else had been carrying the same secret.

Then Alexander’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face turned pale.

“What happened?”” Elena asked.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The hospital.””

Her heart dropped.

“Why?””

Alexander looked at her.

“They found her.””

Elena froze.

“Found who?””

May you like

Alexander whispered:

“Your sister.””
