Chapter 1: The Fall That Wasn’t An Accident
The first thing everyone heard was the sound of a pregnant woman’s body hitting the marble floor.
It echoed through the Howard mansion like a gunshot.
Elena Howard lay motionless at the bottom of the grand staircase, one hand curled protectively around her stomach, her white cardigan stained with dust from the expensive marble tiles. The entire room froze.
Above her, Vanessa stood on the staircase.
For one brief second, her face revealed the truth.
No sadness.
No shock.
Only satisfaction.
Then it disappeared.
Vanessa covered her mouth with both hands and gasped.
“Oh my God,” she whispered.
“Elena…”
She rushed down the stairs, but she stopped several feet away, careful not to touch anything.
“I swear I didn’t want this,” Vanessa cried, her voice trembling perfectly.
“She came at me. I only pushed her away because I was scared.””
Mrs. Howard, the elderly mother of Elena’s husband, stood near the fireplace, her hand pressed against her chest.
“Is she breathing?”” she asked.
Vanessa looked down at Elena and shook her head.
“I don’t know,” she said softly.
“But everyone saw what happened.””
Everyone.
That word was exactly what Vanessa wanted.
Because in a mansion filled with cameras, servants, and family members, Vanessa believed she had created the perfect scene.
A villain.
A victim.
And a story everyone would believe.
Twenty minutes earlier, Elena had been standing in the same room, holding a folder against her chest.
She had known something was wrong.
For months, Vanessa had slowly poisoned the Howard family against her.
First, it was small comments.
Then whispers.
Then carefully placed lies.
“She married Alexander for his money.””
“She’s pretending to love the family.””
“She’s trying to control the inheritance.””
Elena ignored them because she believed the truth would eventually speak for itself.
But Vanessa was patient.
And dangerous.
That afternoon, Vanessa had invited Elena into the mansion’s main hall with a smile.
A smile that never reached her eyes.
“Vanessa, why did you ask me to come here?”” Elena had asked.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I wanted to give you one last chance.””
Elena frowned.
“One last chance for what?””
“To leave this family peacefully.””
The words hung in the air.
Elena stared at her.
“You’re asking me to leave my own home?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You know Alexander only married you because he felt sorry for you.””
Elena’s expression changed.
“Don’t talk about my marriage.””
“Why?”” Vanessa whispered.
“Because you know it’s true?””
Elena tightened her grip on the folder.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Vanessa looked at the folder.
“What’s inside?””
“Something that will prove everything you’ve done.””
For the first time, Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
Only for a second.
Then she smiled.
“You still think you can win?””
Elena didn’t answer.
Because she already knew Vanessa was about to make a mistake.
And Vanessa did.
She stepped forward and grabbed Elena’s arm.
“You should have left when I gave you the chance.””
Elena pulled away.
“Let go of me.””
But Vanessa pushed harder.
Not enough to make it obvious.
Just enough.
The edge of Elena’s shoe slipped against the polished marble.
The world tilted.
She fell.
But as her body hit the floor, Elena did something Vanessa never expected.
She smiled.
Because the fall was exactly where she wanted to be.
Now, lying motionless, Elena listened carefully.
She heard Vanessa’s fake sobs.
She heard the family’s accusations.
“She ruined everything,” Vanessa told Mrs. Howard.
“She manipulated Alexander from the beginning.””
Elena kept her eyes closed.
Her fingers slowly moved beneath her cardigan.
Finding the phone hidden there.
One touch.
The call connected.
“Detective Ruiz,” Elena whispered so quietly nobody noticed.
A calm voice answered.
“Elena, are you safe?””
She looked toward Vanessa, who was still performing her tragedy.
“No,” Elena whispered.
“But the evidence is ready.””
There was a pause.
Then Detective Ruiz replied.
“We’re coming.””
Elena ended the call.
She stayed still.
Because the next part was important.
Vanessa needed to believe she had won.
She needed to keep talking.
And she did.
“She attacked me,” Vanessa told the family.
“I had no choice.””
Elena heard footsteps approaching.
She heard Alexander’s voice from the entrance.
“What happened?””
Vanessa immediately ran toward him.
Her tears appeared instantly.
“Alexander…”
He looked at Elena on the floor.
His face turned pale.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I tried to stop her.””
Alexander looked between them.
Then Vanessa whispered something that made everyone turn cold.
“She was planning to destroy this family.””
Elena remained still.
But inside, she knew.
Vanessa had just given her the final piece of evidence.
Because every word had been recorded.
And Vanessa had no idea that the woman on the floor was not unconscious.
She was listening.

Waiting.
And counting every lie.
