Chapter 13: The Name Hidden In The Will
The envelope felt heavier than it should have.
Elena held it with both hands, staring at the faded handwriting on the front.
Her father’s handwriting.
A man she remembered only through fragments.
A warm smile.
A deep voice.
A hand holding hers when she was young.
A man who disappeared from her life too soon.
Alexander stood beside her.
“Elena…”
She looked at him.
“I don’t understand.””
Vanessa watched from across the hallway.
For once, she wasn’t smiling.
She wasn’t manipulating.
She looked almost relieved.
Because she knew the truth was finally coming out.
Richard stepped forward.
“Give me that envelope.””
Elena immediately moved it behind her.
“No.””
His expression darkened.
“You don’t know what’s inside.””
“Exactly.””
She looked at him.
“And that’s why you’re afraid.””
Detective Ruiz moved closer.
“Open it.””
Everyone waited.
Elena carefully broke the seal.
Inside was an old document.
A legal document.
At the top were three words:
*Last Will Testament.*
She read the first line.
Then stopped.
Her breathing changed.
Alexander noticed.
“What is it?””
Elena looked up slowly.
“It’s my father’s will.””
Richard’s face lost color.
Mrs. Howard whispered:
“No…”
Elena continued reading.
“My father left ownership rights to…”
Her voice became quiet.
She looked at the name.
Then looked at Richard.
“To me.””
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Alexander looked confused.
“What?””
Elena handed the document to Detective Ruiz.
He scanned the pages carefully.
“This appears legitimate.””
Richard shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Elena stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because your father had nothing.””
A bitter smile crossed Elena’s face.
“You really believed that.””
Richard looked angry.
“He was a nobody.””
Her mother stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“He was the only person who knew how to stop the Howards.””
Detective Ruiz read further.
“According to this document, Elena’s father owned a controlling share of several companies connected to Howard International.””
Alexander looked stunned.
“My father built the company.””
Elena’s mother shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Richard.
“He took it.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
The truth was finally reaching the surface.
Years of lies.
Years of stolen power.
Years of pretending.
Elena looked at the document again.
There was one more page.
A handwritten note.
She recognized her father’s words immediately.
*Elena, if you are reading this, it means they found a way to hide the truth from you.*
Her eyes filled with tears.
She continued.
*Never believe that your family name determines your worth. The Howard name was built on power. Yours was built on love.*
Elena closed her eyes.
For years, she had wondered why Richard hated her.
Why Vanessa targeted her.
Why this family had fought so hard to remove her.
Now she understood.
She was not an outsider.
She was the one person who could take everything away from them.
Richard suddenly laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“You think this changes anything?””
Elena looked at him.
“It changes everything.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You still don’t understand.””
Detective Ruiz blocked his path.
“Stay where you are.””
Richard ignored him.
“Your father wasn’t innocent.””
Elena froze.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“There are things your mother never told you.””
Her mother looked frightened.
“Elena…”
Richard continued.
“He wasn’t just investigating me.””
He pointed at the document.
“He was trying to destroy the company.””
Elena looked at her mother.
“Is that true?””
Her mother hesitated.
And that hesitation hurt.
“Mom?””
Her mother took a deep breath.
“Your father wanted justice.””
Richard interrupted.
“He wanted revenge.””
Elena stared at both of them.
Two sides.
Two stories.
One truth.
Detective Ruiz stepped forward.
“Enough.””
He looked at Richard.
“The evidence will decide what happened.””
Then he looked at Elena.
“But there is something else.””
“What?””
Ruiz opened another file.
“We found the original company records.””
Alexander frowned.
“What does that prove?””
Ruiz looked serious.
“It proves Richard wasn’t the only person who benefited from hiding Elena’s identity.””
Everyone turned.
“Someone else signed those documents.””
Elena felt cold.
“Who?””
Ruiz placed the paper on the table.
A signature was visible.
A signature Elena recognized.
Because she had seen it many times.
At family dinners.
At holidays.
In this very mansion.
Mrs. Howard stepped back.
“No…”
Elena looked at her.
“Grandmother?””
May you like
The old woman’s face filled with regret.
And finally, the last secret began to break.
