Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Never Supposed To Return
Nobody moved.
The mansion that had been filled with accusations was suddenly filled with something worse.
Questions.
Alexander looked at Elena.
“Your mother?””
Elena couldn’t answer immediately.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
Because for twelve years, everyone believed her mother was gone.
Dead.
Lost forever.
But now Detective Ruiz was standing there saying the impossible.
A patient file existed.
Connected to her family.
Richard noticed Elena’s reaction.
And for the first time that night, he looked nervous.
Elena saw it.
She saw the smallest crack in his confidence.
“You knew,” she whispered.
Richard looked away.
Alexander turned toward his father.
“Knew what?””
Richard said nothing.
“Dad.””
Still nothing.
Elena stepped closer.
“You knew my mother was alive.””
The room erupted.
Mrs. Howard covered her mouth.
“What are you saying?””
Elena looked at Richard.
“The night before my wedding, he told me something.””
Alexander looked confused.
“What?””
Elena swallowed.
“He told me my mother abandoned me.””
Richard’s expression remained controlled.
“She did.””
“No.””
Elena’s voice became stronger.
“She didn’t.””
Richard looked at her.
“You have no proof.””
Elena smiled sadly.
“Actually, I do.””
She reached into her folder.
Not the same folder filled with evidence against Vanessa.
A different one.
An older one.
One she had carried for years.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital bracelet.
And a letter.
Alexander looked at the items.
“What are those?””
Elena stared at the bracelet.
“The things my mother left behind.””
Detective Ruiz took the letter carefully.
“We found this in the hospital archives.””
He opened it.
The paper was old.
The handwriting faded.
But the message was clear.
“Elena…”
The detective looked up.
“Your mother wrote this before she disappeared.””
Alexander watched Elena.
“What does it say?””
Elena closed her eyes.
She had imagined this moment many times.
But never like this.
“She said she was afraid.””
The room became silent.
“Afraid of someone in the Howard family.””
Richard’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Alexander noticed.
“Dad?””
Richard stepped back.
“This is ridiculous.””
“No,” Elena said.
“You’re afraid.””
Richard looked at her.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
Elena held up the letter.
“Then explain why my mother wrote your name.””
Nobody breathed.
Richard’s expression finally broke.
Alexander stared.
“My grandfather…”
He looked at his father.
“What did you do?””
Richard’s silence was the answer.
But before anyone could confront him, the mansion lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Someone screamed.
A window shattered somewhere upstairs.
Detective Ruiz immediately reached for his flashlight.
“Everyone stay where you are!””
Elena grabbed Alexander’s hand.
Then she heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming from the hallway.
A voice whispered in the darkness.
“Elena…”
Her blood ran cold.
Because it was a voice she hadn’t heard in twelve years.
A voice she thought she would never hear again.
“Mom?”” she whispered.
May you like
The lights came back on.
And standing at the entrance of the mansion was a woman everyone believed was dead.
